08601 was based at Tyseley TMD during the 1980s and was one of two 08s painted in special liveries, 08604 received early BR green and was named Phantom while 08601 in black livery had its' cabside number shortened to 601 and named Spectre. The LMS livery complete with LMS lettering and 3F power classification also featured the modern era cantrail warning stripe in red.

Tyseley was becoming the principal Birmingham depot and provided shunters for many of the yards around the city. 08601 worked at Birmingham New Street Station and in the yards at Washwood Heath, and Bordesley.08601 made a more permanent move to Bescot depot alongside the M5/M6 interchange in 1988 and retained its unique livery through 10 years there.Built in May 1959 at Derby Works and unveiled as D3768, the locomotive had allocations at Derby, Longsight (Manchester) and Carlisle Kingsmoor before being re-numbered as No. 08601 in the mid-1970s following the introduction of the Total Operating Processing System (TOPS). 08601 was based at Tyseley TMD during the 1980s when the depot painted two of its Class 08 shunters in non-standard liveries – 08604 received BR green livery and the name ‘Phantom’. 08601 carried the number 601 in LMS black livery complete with LMS lettering and 3F power classification, and was named ‘Spectre’

Tyseley TMD provided motive power for several locations in the vicinity of the depot and 08601 was recorded working at sites such as Birmingham New Street Station, Washwood Heath and Bordesley Yard. Assisted by its unique livery, Spectre became the depots ‘celebrity’ locomotive and it took pride of place at the open day held at the open day on 4th October 1987.

Following a move to Bescot depot in 1988, 08601 maintained both its unique livery and celebrity status throughout its 10 years allocated at Bescot, during which it passed into EWS ownership.

EWS withdrew No. 08601 in 1999 whilst allocated to Eastleigh TMD. Purchased by Harry Needle Railroad Company in 2004, the locomotive was by a mere shell stored at EWS’s Component Recovery & Distribution Centre in Wigan, many of the major components having already been removed. What was left of the locomotive was cut-up by HNRC in December 2005.
