The DC-7 was the last major piston engine powered transport made by the Douglas Aircraft Company. The DC-7 was produced from 1953 to 1958 when the first jet passenger aircraft arrived on the scene. The DC-7 was the first airliner to provide non- stop service from coast to coast in America. In total there were 338 DC-7s produced and purchased by 18 different airlines. When the jets replaced the DC-7 they found new work as cargo planes and charter work.
This DC-7 was MSN 831 originally delivered to KLM on March 7, 1957 as PH-DSH. In March 1963 the aircraft was purchased by Sudflug International and operated as D-ABAC until 1968 when the airline went bankrupt. The DC-7 went on to be registered as VR-BCW and N9498. In 1974 N9498 was confiscated because it had been gunning-running during the Biafran War in the late 1960s. The final registration was HB-SSA located at the Geneva International Airport Switzerland where it was used for fire fighting practice until November 2006 then broken up.
