Peco GR-300 Pair of generic narrow gauge bolster wagons.

Utlising the underframes for the Lynton and Barnstaple 4-wheel wagons Peco are producing generic narrow gauge flat and timber bolster wagons, which will be available in pairs.

Bolster wagon pairs were used to could carry long loads like tree trunks, the swivelling bolsters allowing the load some movement relative to the wagons on sharp curves. The bolsters could be coupled, with flat wagons acting as spacers for longer loads, or firmly attached to each end of a long, rigid load to act as bogies. Most narrow gauge lines kept a pair of bolsters on hand as these were very useful for moving lengths of rail up the line for track maintenance works.

Peco OO9 Side Tipping Skip Wagons Brown Pack of 3 GR-330

Peco OO9 GR-330 Side Tipping Skip Wagon - Brown

Robert Hudson Ltd of Leeds are one of the best-known British suppliers of industrial narrow gauge and contractors' railway equipment. The 'Rugga' skip was probably their most numerous product, with several hundred still to be found on narrow gauge heritage lines, often still delivering ballast for the permanent way gang!

The familiar Rugga V-Skip tipping wagon design was introduced in the 1930s, developed from earlier designs dating back to the earliest railways and similar wagons ordered from Hudsons for WW1 trench railway requirements. They could be supplied to the customer's specific requirements with a skip size ranging from 13.5 to 54 cubic feet (0.38 to 1.53 cubic metres) and in most track gauges. The company boasted that at any one time several thousand could be supplied from stock!
The design allows the skip to tip in either direction, perfect for small industrial railways that needed to move and unload materials quickly and efficiently.

The Peco models are supplied in packs or 3 skips, complete with integral OO9 loop couplers designed for prototypical close coupling. This pack is finished with a brown ship body, possibly a good starting point to recreate the typical well-rusted appearance!

Roco HOe 0-6-0 Tank Loco Epoch 3 33241

A nicely detailed model of a small German design 0-6-0 narrow gauge tank engine.
One of a small number of ready to run OO9 or HOe locomotives this engine is a good way to get trains moving on a OO9 layout.

Narrow gauge engines are surprisingly adaptable locomotives, even a small engine designed for industrial shunting and contractors railways would be capable of hauling trains for several miles without difficulty and many narrow gauge lines employed small engines like this. Although of a distinctly Germanic appearance narrow gauge engines were much more mobile than standard gauge 'mainline' locomotives and many European locomotive builders' engines could be found on British narrow gauge lines. A German built engine would not be out of place with a short train on a British layout, well known Kilmarnock loco builders Andrew Barclay even copied some Orenstein & Koppel (of Berlin) designs.

Release expected December 2018

We are taking orders for these models, we will contact customers pre-ordering this model to advise our sell price and arrange payment when the models are released.

This is a model of the British Army Royal Engineers Railway Operating Department 2-ft/600mm narrow gauge locomotive 778, one of the few survivors of the many thousands of engines built duing WW1. 778 has been restored to service by the Leighton Buzzard Light Railway.
No. 778 (391-025) has:
- open cab with spectacle shields
- working headlights
- chimney with cover
- water lifter with hose and hose tray

These engines were ordered from the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, a 4-6-0 design probably based on the Hunslet locomotive design selected by the War Department. Locomotives were ordered from the USA as British building capacity was insufficient to deliver enough locomotives fast enough under wartime conditions.
Following the armistice hundreds of new or barely used locomotives lay at military dumps and these were sold for further use by railway companies, construction contractors and on industrial sites. The Welsh Highland Railway, Ashover Light Railway, Glyn Valley Tramway and Snailbeach Railway all used these engines in the UK. Many more saw further use in France, Belgium, the middle-east and India.

Bachmann Branchline OO9 Narrow Gauge 393-025 WD WW1 Covered Goods Wagon WD Grey Weathered

Bachmann have announced a range of WW1 themed narrow gauge models as their own entry into the British narrow gauge market.

These covered box vans were built for use on the extensive network of 2ft/600mm narrow gauge lines which served the trenches of WW1. The vans were intended to provide for delivery of supplies and evacuation of casualties, however the tall vans proved unsuitable for use on the roughly laid and heavily shelled tracks to the front lines.
Many of the vans were successfully used after the war on more permanent narrow gauge railways, including farm and estate railways.

Peco OO9 Glyn Valley Tramway Locomotive Body Kit GL-6

Peco GL-6 OO9 Glyn Valley Tramway Locomotive Body Kit

The roadside Glyn Valley Tramway was required to use tram type locomotives, though the railway needed a more powerful conventional type of engine than city street tramways. Three similar locomotives were supplied by the Beyer Peacock company with the side plating enclosing the bunkers and water tanks extended to the smokebox and skirts fitted all around to enclose the wheels and drive rods. The engines were intended to run cab-foward, so the driver would have a clear view of the line ahead, though this rule was not always followed in service! Orginally condensing gear was fitted so the locomoitve would 'consume its own smoke' but this quickly fell into disuse and was removed after WW1.

This whitemetal body kit is designed to fit on a N gauge 0-6-0 chassis, a number of which are now available from Graham Farish and Dapol locomotives, though with the wheels completely enclosed a Kato 4-wheel tramcar chassis can also be fitted. The builder will need to arrange the chassis moutings to suit the chassis being fitted. Parts are included for the condensing pipes, which can be omitted for later appearance.
Chassis not included.

Peco OO9 Slate Wagons Unbraked Pack of 3 Wagons GR-320

Peco OO9 GR-320 Slate Wagons Unbraked - Pack of 3 Wagons

The 2-ton capacity iron slate waggon depicted by this model is one of the most numerous types, with hundreds built and many surviving. As these waggons tend to run in long rakes, the models have semi-permanent close-couplings fitted in their NEM pockets. These can be pulled out with fine nosed pliers and replaced with conventional OO-9 hoop-and-loop couplings (supplied) at each end of the rake. We plan to make the close couplers available as a separate item in due course.

Roughly one in five waggons was fitted with brakes. These were spread throughout the train and turned so the brake handles were all on the same side of the train, pointing towards Porthmadog on the Ffestiniog Railway.

The waggons are being offered in two different sets: one with a selection of three unbraked vehicles, and the other in a set containing one braked and two unbraked. Each waggon carries its own specific markings and running number. The sets are made up with a random selection of running numbers. Each waggon is fitted with a removable slate load, which is conveniently hollow, thus giving the modeller the added option of including some further weight if required.

Peco OO9 Side Tipping Skip Wagons Grey Pack of 3 GR-331

Peco OO9 GR-330 Side Tipping Skip Wagon - Grey

This pack is finished with a grey painted body, one of the standard colours applied to a newly delivered or unusually well maintained skip (eg a preserved example).

Modelled from official drawings, contempary notes and photographs, although at first glance the coach appears to be quite plain, close inspection reveals a wealth of subtle detail in the painting and printing.

The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway ordered 16 passenger carriages from the Bristol Wagon and Carriage Works Co. The vehicles delivered were among the largest and best equiped narrow gauge coaches running in Britain and, of substantial construction, stood up well to service across the North Devon moors. All joined the Southern Railway stock in 1923 and received a coat of Maunsell olive green, which they retained until the closure of the L&B in 1935.
