Heljan 2901 OO Gauge BR D2990 Class 07 Ruston & Hornsby 0-6-0 diesel shunter BR Green with wasp stripes
In the early 1960s British Railways Southern region needed small diesel locomotives to replace the various small steam shunting engines in use around Southampton docks. Finding a suitable 275bhp design offered by Ruston & Hornsby fourteen locomotives were ordered in 1962. BR specified electric transmission, making these locos R&H class LSSE (Class LSS, Electric transmission).
The design features two low bonnets over the engine (long end) and fuel tank/auxiliary compartment (short end), the tall off-centre cab providing the driver with a good view in both directions. Footsteps set in behind the buffer beams also provided shunters with a well protected riding position safely within the locomotive outline.
This model is finished in the original livery style of BR green with wasp stripe ends.
