The galleon is a type of sailing ship that was created in the first half of the 16th century and underwent great further development up to the beginning of the 17th century. Galleons were huge men-of-war, which were armed with numerous cannon. The Spaniards used their large galleons to transport troops and equipment westwards across the Atlantic in the conquest of the Americas. On their return voyages they were loaded with captured gold treasure which excited the covetousness of pirates time and again.
