The U.S.S. Fletcher DD-445 was commissioned in June, 1942, with Lieutenant Commander William M. Cole in charge. With her first mission at Guadalcanal, she sank two Japanese destroyers and seriously damaged a third. Overall, she received fifteen battle stars for her WWII service, and five more during the Korean War.
