In 1929 the LMS tested a Sentinel as a possible light shunting engine, quite possibly intending to replace some of the 50+ years old 0-4-0 locomotives on dockside shunting duties. The works shunter number 6515, the former GWR 12 was used and the LMS placed an initial order for 4 Sentinels, 7160 to 7163 later renumbered 7180 to 7183. At nationalisation these engines were distributed between Sutton Oak (2) Ayr (1) and Shrewsbury (1) sheds. The LMS also purchased a single-speed example of the later 'balanced engine' design Sentinel numbered 7164.
