| > Corgi Aviation Archive > World War II, Fighters | Corgi 1/72 Hawker Hurricane MkIIC RAF 83 OTU (AA32007) Die-cast model of the Hawker Hurricane MkIIc in the camouflage and markings of an aircraft serving with 83 OTU (Operational Training Unit) from RAF Perplow mid-1944. These units gave new pilots advanced operational experience of flying the Hurricane as a fighter under combat conditions before they were sent to squadrons. New pilots would receive advanced flying training on Miles Masters or North American Harvards, passing on to group pools to make the basic flying conversion to the Hurricane. Many of the pilots in the early part of the Battle of Britain were joining squadrons with minimal hours on the type, having no idea how to use the aircraft as a fighting machine. With insufficient numbers to spare for training units, the squadrons themselves were responsible for training new pilots but with the arrival of the later marks of Hurricane in early 1940 this changed and Operational Training Units (OTUs) were formed. Formed in July 1943 at RAF Childs Ercall , which in turn became RAF Peplow in August of that year, 83 OTU operated mainly Wellingtons and Hurricanes throughout it’s operational life.
