Corgi 1/72 USAF Boeing B17 Flying Fortress Memphis Belle (US33315)
The B-17F, 41-24485 went into service with the 8th Air Force s 324th Bombardment Squadron based at Bassingbourne, Cambridgeshire. Code DF-A and named Memphis Belle , the aircraft achieved celebrity status as the first 8th Air Force bomber to complete 25 missions. On its return from Europe at the close of WWII, Memphis Belle and its crew participated in a public relations tour of the United States. The government wanted to thank U.S. citizens for their support during the war and dispatched some of the more notable heroes to do so. For many years, the original aircraft sat on Mud Island in Tennessee. Since 2005, however, it has been on display and is currently undergoing restoration at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, OH.
