British Airways Ltdwas a private airline company operating in Europe in the 1930's.It was first formed as Allied British Airways in October,1935 by the merger of Spartan Air Lines and United Airways.It rapidly acquired Hillman's Airways, adopted itsdefinitive name and transferred its UK base to the new Gatwick Airport.Its corporate emblem was the winged lion, initially equipped with a mixture of aircraft including thre Junkers  Ju52's and De Havilland Express it rapidly expanded and established services to Paris, Lille, Cologne, Amsterdam, Hannover, Hamburg, Copenhagen Malmo and Stockholm

The British Westland Lysander was a slow-flying high-wing two seat monoplane, lightly armed, and designed pre-war to cooperate with ground forces. No.225 Squadron was reformed on the 11th October 1939 from No..614A Squadron. Its Lysanders were mainly used in Army excersises except for some coastal patrols conducted from June 1940. They were easy targets for German fighters and suffered heavy losses in France and Belgium. They were soon relegated to second line duties where the STOL capabilities of the aircraft was used to their full potential

An apparent reconstruction of Halifax Mkll Srs.1 W1048 was made in the beginning of 1942 by the English Electric company.On the 27th April 1942 it flew up from the Scottish airfield Kinloss to its first and at the same time last operational flight, piloted by P/O D.McIntyre, together with some other Halifaxes of 35th squadron and with airplanes of two further squadrons it went to attack the battleship Tirpitz which was anchored in Foettenfjord near Trondheim in Norway

Starting out as a three engined transport the JU52 served as a bomber, aerial ambulance, floatplane, minesweeper, glider tug and other roles to numerous to mention.In October 1930 the first Ju-52 flew and demonstrated the double wing technique of full flaps and aerlions, which gave the aircraft tremendous lift and a short take off.Only 5 Ju-52's were built as the 3m versions with 3 engines instead of the single one of the prototype proved to have much better performance

No.180 Squadron was formed at West Raynham,Norfolk on the 13th September 1942, as a light bomber squadron equipped with Mitchells.Early in October it moved to Foulsham - also in Norfolk - and it was from there on the 22nd January 1943 that it flew its first operational mission against the enemy - a raid on oil targets at Terneuzen (Ghent) in Belgium

Xlll formed at Gosport on the10th January 1915 and operated from France.The inter war years saw the squadron operate a variety of aircraft.In the autumn of 1939 the squadron was equipped with Lysanders and operated in France until May 1940 when the squadron changed role and theatre.The following year was spent on anti-submarine and anti-invasion patrols before Blenheims arrived and the Squadron returned to army co-operation duties

The prototype for the "Mosquito Photo-Reconnaissance Mark l " with the tailcode "W4051" (PR.l) performed its first flight on 10th June 1941.The PR.l looked like a Mosquito bomber variant, as it retained the glass nose and bombbay doors, but it included five camera ports.There was a port for an F24 oblique camera behind and below the wings and twin ports for an F52 stereo camera pair behind the bom-bay doors.There was a port in front of each bomb-bay doors, with the bomb-bay accommodating either an F24 stereo camera pair or a single K17 camera

During its service many variants of the Ju52/3m were produced including the g5e and the later g7e, which was the major production version.An improved radio identified the Ju 52/3mg6e.While the g7e had a wider loading door and an increased loaded weight and could be fitted with an alternative wheel, float or ski undercarriage, additionally the 7e featured automatic pilot.The final production versions were the g8e, 9e and 10e and featured increased cabin window size and a 13mm machine gunin a dorsal position

Although its role necessitated flights from the UK, via Gibralter, to Sale, in Morocco, No.295 Squadron normally retained standard European Bomber Command camouflage on its Halifax's rather than the North African theatre bomber camouflagein which mid-stone replaced the areas of dark green - DG396 was the exception boasting the less common desert scheme.On the 17th September 1943 this aircraft towing a Horsa glider, was attacked by eight Ju88's.Its pilot Flg Off Norman, refused to jettison his glider and skillfully evaded cannon and rocket fire from the Ju88's

The role that the Lysander is best remembered for is as a 'spy taxi' picking up and dropping off secret agents behind enemy lines.For these operations the aircraft were painted black and fitted with long range fuel tanks beneath the fuselage and a ladder fixed to the side of aircraft to allow agents to enter and exit quickly.V9367 is the last airworthy example of this historic type.It was built in Canada by the National Steel Car Corporation,and was uswed by the RCAF as a target tug during the war. In October 1971 wwork was started on restoring the aircraft and completed in December 1979 when it flew again painted as V9441 as operated by 309 (Polish) Squadron

The first B-17 Flying Fortress to be based in Australia were 14 early model Flying Fortress's of the 19th Bomb Group which had been evacuated from Del Monte air field in the Phillipines.They began arriving at Batchelor airfield in the Northern Territory on 17th December 1941.By New Years Day 1942, eleven B-17's flew to a new base at Malang in Java.Their main target then was Japanese shipping.These B-17's were reinforced in January 1942 by some LB-30 Liberators and some new B-17E's of the 7th Bomber Group

In April 1941, 205 Squadron received its first Catalina and one of their aircraft had the distinction of being the first british aircraft shot down in the Pacific war when sent out to shadow a Japanese invasion convoy.Yhe squadron was engaged in trying to locate Japanese naval forces on their way to invade Malaya and the Dutch East Indies.After losing several boats, it moved to Java at the end of the year from its exposed base at Seletar, when Japanese forces landed it retired to the south coast of the island and in March 1942 to Australia, where it disbanded on 31st March 1942 Model wingspan 440mm,

Constituted as 316th transport Group on 2nd Feb.1942 and activated on 14th Feb. then Redesignated 316th Troop Carrier Group in July 1942.Trained with C-47 and C-53 aircraft and moved to the Mediterranean theatre then assigned to Ninth AF. They transported supplies and evacuated casualties in support of the Allies drive across North Africa.In May 1943 they began training for the invasion of Sicily.They received the DUC for carrying reinforcements to Sicily and received another DUC for supporting aerial and ground operations in Egypt.
