Corgi 1/72 Boeing Vertol Chinook HC3 ZH904 RAF No.18 Squadron Odiham 2012 AA34213
Perhaps the most visible exponent of the emergence rotary power on the modern battlefield is the impressive Boeing Vertol Chinook.  This large tandem rotor helicopter can operate from land or ship and is capable of delivering up to 55 troops and their equipment or around 26,000lb of weapons and supplies, including the ability to carry large underslung loads suspended from hard points underneath its fuselage for maximum flexibility.  With a comprehensive avionics package and the ability to both detect threats and adequately defend itself, the Chinook is one of the most important aircraft available to the RAF, who are now the largest operator of the type outside the US.

Corgi 1/72 Westland Wessex The Queen's Flight RAF Museum, Hendon AA37609

Corgi AA37609 Queens' Flight Westland Wessex RAF Museum Hendon

The Westland Wessex was a turbine-powered helicopter which was a development of the American Sikorsky S58. It was picked up by the RAF from the Royal Navy in the early sixties when they required a general-purpose helicopter capable of carrying troops, conducting ground attacks and acting as an air ambulance. In 1969, two Wessexes were ordered with specific modifications in mind, with the aim of VIP use, specifically with The Queen's Flight. Prince Charles, Princess Anne and The Queen Mother were regular passengers, with Prince Philip even piloting the aircraft over the years. It wasn't until August 1977 that Queen Elizabeth herself finally took her seat on board and took to the skies. Now housed in the RAF museum in Hendon, it continues to draw a crowd.

Westland Lynx HAS 3 (ICE), assigned to HMS Endurance, 2002
Westland Lynx HAS 3 ICE XZ246 (434/EE) is one of a number of helicopters, which have served on board Antarctic survey and ice patrol vessel HMS Endurance, in particularly challenging conditions.  For this specific role, some of the equipment usually found on Royal Navy Lynx aircraft was removed, but the reliable Lynx proved to be essential in the effective polar operations of Endurance. Two ice modified Lynx aircraft were usually carried on board HMS Endurance, at any one time.

Corgi 1/72 Westland Puma Helicopter HC1 XW220 33 Squadron Gulf War Kuwait 1991 AA27004

Corgi AA27004 Operation Granby Westland Puma Helicopter Model.
By the time of the 1991 Gulf War conflict, the Puma HC.1 had already been in service with the RAF for 20 years and had proven to be a capable and effective medium lift helicopter, seeing active service in Northern Ireland and in humanitarian roles such as the 1988 Jamaican flash flood. It was the 1991 Gulf Conflict that brought Pumas fully to war. They played a vital role in moving British troops across Kuwait during the defeat of Iraqi forces and at the climax of the conflict, proved decisive in rapidly mobilising and deploying troops preventing Iraqi forces from sabotaging the Rumaila oil field. The Pumas were painted in a water based sand colour which rapidly weathered leaving them in a distinctive shade of pink.

HMS Gannet, SAR Flight is a Royal Navy Search and Rescue Squadron formed in 1971 and based at RNAS Prestwick in Scotland.  The base hosted three Naval Air Squadrons: 814 NAS, 824 NAS and 819 NAS, but latterly only the SAR flight of three helicopters flew Sea Kings from there. Vital SAR operations around the Western coast of Scotland and across the Highlands in 2011 saw 298 call-outs and 240 people rescued.
The unit's Sea Kings have also featured on the popular television show Highland Rescue, helping to publicise not only the great work undertaken by the Squadron at HMS Gannet, but also the versatility and excellence of the helicopter that has now been in service with the Royal Navy in the SAR role since 1978.

Corgi 1/72 Westland Puma Helicopter HC Mk.1 XW219 230 Sqn RAF Benson, November 2009 AA27001

The Puma HC-1 is a twin engine medium sized transport and utility helicopter, filling a useful gap between the smaller Lynx and larger Chinook and Merlin fleets. Despite entering service in the early 1970s, the Pumas have not gone through the same various stages of development as other similar machines such as the Lynx, instead retaining their original designation of HC Mk.1. Along with the rest of the RAF?s Puma fleet at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire, 230 Squadron has operated the Puma HC Mk.1 since the early 1970s.

Entering service with the RAF in the early 1970s the Westland Puma HC.1 has become almost unique within the RAF by operating for over three decades without receiving any major upgrades or the introduction of new improved versions. This is testament to the basic qualities of the design and its robust nature.

Corgi 1/72 Sikorsky UH-60L 'Blackhawk Down' Super-Six Four, Operation Gothic Serpent,Mogadishu 20th Anniversary AA35908B

In August 1993 the Joint Special Operations Command of the United States launched Operation Gothic Serpent. This was an initiative designed to remove warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid from power in Mogadishu. A raid to arrest two of his senior advisors was launched on the 3rd October. However, the raid was to go down in history as a failure. Not only did Aidid escape but the American troops became surrounded in the city, casualties were taken and two UH-60L Blackhawks were lost.

The mission was led by elements of the American Rangers and Delta Force, with some travelling into the city via armoured vehicles, while others were dropped from helicopters. The first UH60 to be lost was Super Six One, which was hit by a Rocket Propelled Grenade, and resulted in it crashing killing both pilots and left the crew severely wounded. The scene needed to be secured by two surviving Delta Force snipers.

Corgi's latest model of the Wessex HAS.3 as operating from HMS Antrim in 1982. Humphrey was a Wessex HAS.3 based on HMS Antrim with 100 Flight of 737 NAS. It was used to rescue the crew and passengers of 2 Wessex HU.5 that crashed on South Georgia during Operation Paraquat, the British operation to retake the island in late April 1982. Humphrey also undertook some Spec.ops insertions and rescued a number of SAS/SBS personnel who's motor had failed on their inflateable boats. Corgi's new Helicopter model is AA39006 a 1/72nd scale diecast model of the Westland Lynx helicopter  as used by the Army Air Corps in Iraq during Operation Granby.
Designed and built by Westland Helicopters in Yeovil, the Westland Lynx is a British multi-purpose military helicopter which was heavily involved during the First Gulf War in Iraq. Early in 1991 the British Army deployed twenty-four heavily armoured Lynx helicopters alongside the smaller Gazelle to Iraq, giving them the mission of locating and destroying Iraqi tanks as well as supporting the advancing coalition ground forces. On 26th February 1991 during Operation Desert Sabre, No. 654 Squadron engaged and ultimately destroyed no fewer than seven armoured vehicles of the Iraqi 12th Armoured Division. No. 654 Squadron returned to their base in Detmold on 22nd March 1991 without a single loss.

The Whirlwind HAS.7 was the first dedicated anti-submarine helicopter supplied to the Royal Navy. They usually worked in pairs one with the type 146 sonar and the other with a mk30 passive ASW torpedo carried in the recessed bay in the fuselage.

In 1960 719 NAS was activated at HMS Sea Eagle at Eglinton, County Londonderry as part of the Joint Anti-Submarine School, operating with the RAF Shackletons based out of RAF Ballykelly. XN 357 was assigned to the Squadron in May 1960 and on 7th February 1961 it lost power off the coast off Northern Ireland and ditched into the sea. Fortunately there were no casualties amongst the crew who were all safely picked up.
