Corgi 1/72 Blackburn Buccaneer XW533/A Miss Jolly Roger RAF No237 OCU Gulf War 25th Anniversary AA34112

Corgi Aviation Archive AA34112 1/72 Blackburn Buccaneer XW533/A Miss Jolly Roger RAF No237 OCU Gulf War 25th Anniversary

Even though it was in the twilight of its service career, the Buccaneer was called upon to take part in the 1991 Gulf War, but only at the eleventh hour. Tornado and Jaguar crews were carrying out low-level, interdiction strike missions against enemy targets, but the effectiveness of Iraqi anti-aircraft fire resulted in these sorties having to be carried out at a higher level, which reduced their effectiveness. The RAF needed to improve the standard of its precision bombing and the Buccaneer had the ability to laser target mark ? twelve aircraft were rushed to the gulf.  The ?Sky Pirates? were in the war and making a valuable contribution to the success of Operation Granby. Displaying the individual artwork associated with many RAF Gulf War aircraft, XW533 ?Miss Jolly Roger? showed that sometimes, older aircraft can show the new boys how the job should be done.

Corgi 1/72 BAE Hawk Red Arrows Display Team Aircraft Model AA36012

BAE Hawk Red Arrows
Providing advanced pilot and weapons delivery training for a new, or converting student pilot is perhaps one of the most important duties undertaken by any of the world?s air forces.  For Royal Air Force students, this means many hours spent in the cockpit of the British Aerospace Hawk advanced jet trainer, which has now been in service for forty years.  Replacing the diminutive Folland Gnat trainer, the Hawk proved to be a highly adaptable and extremely reliable aircraft in service, with large numbers serving with the RAF and many overseas air forces.  Perhaps the Hawk is most famous for its association with the world famous Royal Air Force Aerobatic Display Team, the Red Arrows, who enjoy a reputation for excellence the world over.

Corgi 1/72 Panavia Tornado GR4 Operation Ellamy Libya 2011 AA33616

Corgi AA33616 1/72 Panavia Tornado GR4 Operation Ellamy Libya 2011

Corgi's model of the the Tornado GR4 is a diecast model of the two-seat RAF aircraft and is still one of the few aircraft in the world that is able to operate at low level, day or night and in poor weather. Having been in service with the RAF for more than thirty years it has undergone major upgrades and enhancements to keep the aircraft amongst the forefront of attack aircraft. The GR4 was deployed in various operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and played a major part in Operation Ellamy in the skies over Libya in 2011. The Operation was part of an international coalition aimed at enforcing a Libyan no-fly zone to prevent government forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi from carrying our air attacks on opposing forces. The coalition?s operation was successful in that the no-fly zone was established with the Tornado proving itself once again to be a vital attack aircraft for the RAF.

Corgi have also produced a model of one of the RAF Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft which also took part in operations over Libya. Corgi AA36406.

Corgi 1/72 SEPECAT Jaguar GR 1a/3 XZ356/EP Mary Rose RAF No.6 Sqn, Gulf War 25th Anniversary AA35414

SEPECAT Jaguar GR.1a/3, XZ356/EP, 'Mary Rose', RAF No.6 Sqn, Gulf War 25th Anniversary
Royal Air Force Jaguars from Coltishall were amongst the first British aircraft to arrive in the Gulf, in support of Operation Granby in 1991.  Wearing the distinctive desert pink camouflage over-wash, a number of the aircraft also benefitted from the addition of individual nose artwork, showcasing the artistic talents of RAF personnel.  Jaguar XZ356/N carried the nose artwork ?Mary Rose?, which included the image of a rather sinister looking sea witch. This aircraft was to see extensive action during her Gulf deployment, completing 33 combat missions against strategic Iraqi military targets.  On return to the UK, XZ356 was yet another RAF Gulf War aircraft present at the 1991 Mildenhall Air Fete.  2016 will see the RAF commemorating the 25th anniversary of their contribution to Operation Granby.

Corgi 1/72 Panavia Tornado F3 ADV 5 Sqn RAF Coningsby 1991 AA39803

Corgi brings you AA39803 a 1/72nd scale diecast model of the RAF Tornado F3 ADV based at RAF Coningsby during 1991.
Towards the end of the Cold War period the RAF realised that its fleet of English Electric Lightnings, whilst still very fast and capable interceptors, were becoming increasingly hampered by their short range and limited armament. To replace the Lightnings and the McDonnell Douglas F4 Phantoms then in service, the RAF introduced the Panavia Tornado F3.

Corgi 1/72 Panavia Tornado GR1 ZA447/EA Mig Eater RAF 15Sqn Gulf War Anniversary Model AA39806

Panavia Tornado GR.1, ZA447/EA, 'MiG Eater', RAF No.15 Sqn, Gulf War 25th Anniversary
The RAF aircraft that took part in the 1991 Gulf War are the subject of great interest and continue to captivate modellers and collectors alike.  Painted in a distinctive desert pink camouflage over-wash, PANAVIA Tornado GR.1 ZA447/EA carries attractive nose art decoration, which was a feature of many of the Gulf War serving RAF aircraft.  Carrying the name ?MiG Eater?, complete with fearsome shark teeth artwork, this aircraft was thought to have destroyed an Iraqi Air Force MiG-29 fighter (hence the name), whilst completing an airfield denial mission, over Iraq. It was later discovered that it was actually a Mirage F.1, but ZA447 was one of the busiest Tornados over the Gulf, completing 40 combat missions for coalition air forces. It later went on to be one of the star exhibits at the 1991 Mildenhall Air Fete.

Corgi 1/72 Gloster Meteor F3, YQ-Q, 616 Squadron AA27402

Corgi AA27402 a 1/72nd scale model of the Gloster Meteor.

First flying in 1943, the Gloster Meteor was the RAF?s earliest jet fighter. It entered service with No.616 Squadron in July 1944. Jet aircraft at this time were considered extremely top secret and therefore the Meteor was limited in its combat use. Often painted white to aid identification by other Allied planes and avoid being mistaken for German planes, the F3 was despatched in 1945 along with 616 Squadron to 2nd TAF to provide air defence against the Messerschmitt Me 262. Later that year, the Squadron was operational in the Netherlands supporting the Canadian Army in its efforts to clear the Germans out of Holland, engaging in ground attacks due to not encountering a single enemy aircraft on its sorties.

Corgi's 1/72nd AA27401, Meteor.as based at Lubeck during 1945.
The Gloster Meteor was the first jet fighter to enter service with the RAF. First flying in 1943 it entered service with 616 squadron in July 1944. Confined to operations only over the United Kingdom to preserve the secrets of its technology, the Meteor was soon used on anti-V1 patrols. Their terrific acceleration allowed them to be very effective in this role, accounting for fourteen V1s by the end of the war, a good total from only a small number of airframes.
