The Lynx is a fast, agile and versatile helicopter that has seen over 30 years service with the Royal Navy. It is also the maritime helicopter choice for many other Navies around the world.
It features composite main rotor blades, known as CMRBs, as well as a superior sensor outfit. The nose-mounted Sea Owl thermal imaging camera introduced in the Mk 8, as the HMA 8 is known in the Royal Navy, provided a passive identification capability. The addition of this sensor required the repositioning of the Sea Spray radar into a radome below the nose. It also introduced a range of other avionice upgrades, as well as a new tail rotor, as used on the Army's AH7 Lynx.
The Royal Navy version is operated by the Fleet Air Arm and has numerous roles. Its primary roles are anti-surface warfare (ASuW) and anti-submarine warfare (ASW). The ASuW capability is frequently used in counter piracy, counter drugs and Maritime Counter Terrorism (MCT) operations. An embarked Lynx armed with Sea Skua anti-ship missiles enables a warship to strike enemy units over 100 miles away. Its secondary roles include Search and Rescue (SAR), Helicopter Delivery Service (HDS) and gunnery spotting.
