In the Toyota history of motor sport success the Celica was for many years regarded as their flagship in the World Rally Championships, until 1997 when the Corolla WRC took part in the Rally Finnland for the first time on trial. The Corolla was similar in appearance to the production road car, but it was a turbocharged four-wheel drive power monster, amply capable of seeing off any competition. According to the conditions and official data it had a 300 bhp engine, which in fact, thanks to the turbocharger, gave it well over 350 bhp. In January 1998 the Corolla ran in its first classified race of the season at Monte Carlo for the Toyota Team Europa (TTE); a race which was promptly won by their driver Carlos Sainz and in which Didier Auriol immediately shone with best times. The Corolla was so impressive that, with the aid of its two professional drivers, it secured the WRC Constructors' World Title in 1999.
