This spectacular coup was developed on the basis of the 300 SLR under the leadership of Rudolf Uhlenhaut. Its 8-cylinders-in-line engine composed of two blocks of four cylinders delivered 300 bhp, a sensational output for 1955 (the Beetle managed 25 bhp). With its top speed of 290 km/h it was the fastest car with a road licence. The coup had gullwing doors like the 300 SL presented the previous year, a concept that was taken up again in the Mercedes SLS AMG (art. 07100).
