The BR standard 3MT 2-6-2 tank locomotives were designed to fill the slot between the smaller class 2 tank engines and larger tender engines, many of which were older designs of Victorian heritage. These modern tank engines offered similar power, utility, economy and crew comfort as the GWRs' earlier 45xx design, with which they shared many duties on the Western region.

Sadly like many of the BR standard classes the 3MTs had a short life. Diesel multiple units took over branch, local and suburban services and much local goods business was lost to road transport.

82005 was completed in May 1952, being sent to the Western region at Tyseley (Birmingham) shed. Moving to South Wales at Barry 9/53 the loco tried life in the west country at Newton Abbot from 6/55, but preferred South Wales, returning to Treherbert 8/56. Moving to Bristol Bath Road in 5/58 before travelling to the northern end of the GWR at Chester 7/58, now having been painted green.

82005 wastransferred to the Midland region allocation from 4/60 as regional bondaries were tidied up and the following year found her way to the Cambrian route from Shrewsbury 4/61 and Machynllyth 7/61, switching between the two sheds briefly 10/61 and 11/61.

Transferred to Nine Elms 4/65 number 82005 was withdrawn the following September, being back 'home' in South Wales in Ferbruary 1966 as she passed through Severn Tunnel Junction en-route to Birds at Risca and scrapping. 13 years service is creditable for the standard 3MT tanks.
