Despite political changes submarines remain indispensable in the day-to-day operations of the navy. They are needed for defence against naval units and submarines as well as for reconnaissance task.
The U212 is a prime example of innovative technology in submarine construction. Low-noise engines and appliances as well as a new type of hydrogen fuel cell allow for an almost entirely silent propulsion system that is independent of outside air to the greatest possible extent. This pioneering engery conversion development allows a long period of deeply submerged silent cruising - possible for the first time for non-nuclear-powered submarines.
Low acoustic, radar, infrared and magnetic signature: The design of the U212 presents only a very small target area (sensor detection). The pressure hull is made of special high rigidity, a-magnetic steel.

With the Class 212 A submarines the Federal German Navy has available to it the most up-to-date conventional type of submarine, equipped with state-of-the-art technology for long-duration almost silent travel. This submarine is the first in the world to be equipped with an ultra-modern hydrogen fuel cell engine and can operate submerged for weeks independently of external air without needing to come to the surface. The fuel cells are used for long-duration operations at moderate speeds, while the diesel-electric engine with batteries is used for high-speed manoeuvres. The submarine is powered by a newly-developed sickle-shaped propeller. During development the highest priority was placed on reducing the acoustic, magnetic and radar signatures. The armament includes the newly developed heavy-weight Seehecht torpedo that is launched from six torpedo tubes. The submarine is expected to travel at speeds of ca. 10 knots surfaced and ca. 20 knots dived. Weight: 1,450 t.
