The second Chevalier (DD-805) was commissioned January 9th 1945. She was named in honor of the first Chevalier DD451 sunk after battling with the Japanese Destroyer Yugumo off Vella Lavella in the Solomon Isles in 1943. The Chevalier was one of 24 Gearing class destroyers to be modified into radar picket ships in anticipation of the Invasion of Japan. The DDR conversions would give early warning of impending air attacks and allow the fleet to react before the aircraft got in close. Chevalier's conversion involved removing the torpedo mounts and adding a large tripod mast bristling with radar and antenna. Arriving in the Pearl Harbor in July 45, she set sail to bombard Wake Island on August 1st before joining Task Force 38 off of Honsho later that month. She was among the ships to enter Tokyo Bay for the surrender signing.
