The Fokker Dr.1 - Response to the Sopwith Triplane!! In April 1917 when the English used the Sopwith Triplane for the first time and outmanoevred all the German machines, there was an absolute "triplane fever" among the German designers. Each firm was rushing to develop its own triplane, however the only success was the Fokker Dr.I. In August 1917 two fighter squadrons from Richthofen's Fighter Wing 1 received a Fokker Triplane to test. By May 1918 a total of 319 Fokker Dr.1s had been delivered to the air units. Sopwith Camel F.1 - Most successful British WW1 fighter!! In June 1917 the very agile British fighter, the Sopwith Camel, appeared on the Western Front and soon proved its superiority over the German fighters. The agile, fast and well-armed, but difficult-to-fly Camel, developed into the most successful British fighter in the First World War and over 5,500 were produced
