The Challenger 1, which was introduced into the British Army in 1983, was continually upgraded during its period in service, for instance with additional armour on the hull. Thus the Challenger 1 Mk 3s used in the Kosovo Force (KFOR) were equipped with the additional armour on the front and sides of the hull that became familiar in the Gulf War (Operation Desert Sabre) in 1991.The engine capacity of the Challenger 1 Mk 3 is 1,200 hp, max. speed: 56 km/h.
