Go North East provides 72 million passenger journeys each year and employs around 2,100 staff. Go North East is the region’s leading public transport operator and has won two prestigious UK Bus Industry Awards for Marketing in 2013. The origins of the company can be traced back to 1897 when British Electric Traction acquired major stakes in the Gateshead & District, Jarrow & District and Tynemouth Electric Traction companies. In the mid 1980s, during the National Bus Company privatisation, Northern was sold and reformed as Go Ahead Northern which then became the founding company of the Go Ahead Group.
In 2012 Go North East invested £4.5m in the popular Angel service by purchasing 15 Wright Eclipse Gemini B5LH Electric Hybrid double decker buses. This service links the cities of Durham and Newcastle via Chester le Street, stopping next to the iconic Angel of the North sculpture in Low Fell. In 2013 Go North East won a prestigious UK Bus Industry Award for its Green Angel Marketing Campaign.
