Bachmann OO Ketton Cement Sheffield 8-Plank Open Wagon (37-134A)

Although clearly lettered to advertise Ketton Cement this 8-plank open wagon was actually operated by well-known Sheffield coal factors Thos W Ward, whose name and TWW marks also appear on the wagon. It is most likely that this wagon was operated on a contract to supply coal for the Ketton cement companies' kilns, justifying the repainting of the wagon into the customers' colours.

Bachmann OO J G Robinson Corn Oil Tank Wagon (37-683)

A very nice model of one of the tank wagons operated by J G Robinson, a Bristol company producing vegitable oils from grain seeds.

J G Robinson used these wagons to convey edilble oils in connection with their business, which they listed on the wagon as 'seed crushers'. The company was a part of the BOCM group, but for many years operated under the J. G. Robinson name, hence the tank bears the lettering 'a branch of the British Oil & Cake Mills Ltd.'
British Oil and Cake Mills continued to operate under the group name from Avonmouth after WW2, this tank wagon being well-known in the Bristol area lettered BOCM Avonmouth and was modelled in this form by Bachmann some years ago.

Model of an iron bodied covered box van in the livery of BPCM, the British Portland Cement Manfacturers.

Cement required to be kept perfectly dry to ensure it arrived in usable condition. Metal bodied vans provided a much greater level of wetaher protection than wooden bodied wagons and the cement companies purchased small fleets of these vans.

Dapol OO Chance and Hunt Covered Salt Van (4F018100)

A model of a peak-roofed covered salt van in service with Chance and Hunt.

Salt required some protection from the weather in transit. The simple solution to this was to provide a peaked roof, fitted to a standard open wagon to keep the rain out. This gave salt wagons a distinctive appearance.

The rectangular tank wagon is a completely new OO wagon from Dapol.

This is the first model using this new tooling carries the livery of Imerial Chemical Industries, who operated these wagons to convey ammonia and nitrates, commonly used for fertilizer production.

This new model features the new Dapol 7-plank open wagon body with fixed ends and a 9-foot wheelbase wood frame chassis incorporating NEM coupler mounting pockets.

Previous models have featured and end door design, used by major carriers, collieries and coal factors. Smaller coal merchants did not need the end doors, making this new model more apporpriate for many private owner wagons.

This model replicates wagon 17 in the fleet of Somerset coal merchant Small & Son. This was a family concern which grew to deal in farm produce and supplies as well as coal, describing their business as coal, corn, forage & lime merchants. Depots were operated in Taunton, Tiverton Junction, Thornfalcon (Chard branch) and Norton (Fitzwarren), serving the rural and aggricultral communities of West Somerset and North Devon.

Coal factors Lowell Baldwin of Bristol supplied coal to several industrial consumers, justifying the purchase of these large capacity wagons. This is an ideal wagon for delivering coal to almost any industrial plants' boilers or to your towns' local coal gas plant.

20-ton capacity coal wagons were introduced in the 1930's, the railway companies offering a better rate per ton for coal haulage in these larger wagons. To assist with unloading these high-capacity wagons two doors were fitted in each side, plus end and often four bottom hatch doors.

Dapol OO PJ & JP 20-Ton Steel Mineral Wagon (B872)

Partridge, Jones and John Paton appear to have commenced their partnership around 1895, joining a wide range of coal, iron and steel interests in South Wales. The limited company was formed by formal amalgamation of the partners' extensive interests in 1920.

One of the largest coal and steel manufacturing companys in South Wales the company owned several collieries and steel works, requiring a substantial fleet of railway wagons. Marked with the company initials PJ & JP, the company was an early user of these higher capacity wagons, taking full benefit of the lower haulage rates offered by the GWR for moving traffic in these 20-ton steel wagons.

This model by Dapol features metal wheels and NEM coupler pockets.

An interesting private owner wagon lettered for Crane & Company, manufacturers of fireworks and firework display contractors. Painted in an appropriate bright red livery.

All may not be as it seems however, although the fireworks factory would hve required a supply of coal for its' own heating boilers the Crane family had other business interests. Alexander Crane operated a coal merchants business from Gloucester and it is belived that this wagon worked in connection with this business, rather than the transport of fireworks.

Many large companies operated their own wagons to collect coal for the factory boilers. This wagon carries the lettering of the Shaka Salt company, more commonly remembered for the covered salt vans. The salt vans were usually based on open wagon designs and it is possible that the prototype for this model may have been convertable for use as an open wagon or van.

Dapol OO F H Silvey, Fishponds Bristol 5-plank Open Wagon (B814)

Dapol are releasing a new version of the F H Silvey liveried wagon featuring their new 5-plank body and 9-feet wheelbase wood style chassis. This model will carry a different running number to previous releases, representing another wagon in the large fleet of this Bristol coal supplier.

Based in the Fishponds area of Bristol, home to many engineering firms including locomotive builders' Pecketts, F H Silvey operated an extensive fleet of wagons. Coal was obtained to supply both the boilers and forges of heavy industry and the homes of the workers. The wagon fleet was kept busy year-round, fetching coal from Yorkshire and Kent as well as local sources in Somerset and Gloucestershire.

Featuring all new tooling including a 9-feet wheelbase wood frame style chassis this wagon carries the red livery of Stevens &Co. a large firm of coal merchants and factors based in Oxford.

Stevens were a large firm who grew their business by taking over locations and business from other coal merchants as they wished to sell up or retire. The company operated from locations all across the Midlands and home counties, having several depots in Gloucestershire and Warwickshire.

Hornby OO Thomas Lant 4 Plank Open Wagon (R6491)

Thomas Lant was the owner of the Llanelwedd basalt quarry near the market and spa town of Builth Wells, Powys. This wagon would have been used to haul the quarrys' products which included roadstone and tarmacadam.

Low sided 4-plank wagons were normally used for stone loads to prevent overloading, stone being much heavier by volume than the coal, for which taller wagons were needed.

Tar distillers took the coal tar residue from town coal gas plants and by refining this 'waste' product obtained further useful petro-chemicals. Many of the chemical companies of the 20th century started out with tar distilling.

The Cadbury company set up a modern chocolate factory at Bournville, Birmingham. To feed the furnaces the company invested in a small fleet of hopper wagons, greatly simplifying the emptying of wagons on arrival.

This model is painted in the unusual yellow livery adopted to highlight the company's name in passing goods trains.
