Dapol 4F-090-001 OO Gauge Lowell Baldwin Ltd. 9 Plank Open Coal Wagon

A large coal factor company, Lowell Baldwin of Bristol supplied coal to many industrial consumers, justifying the purchase of these large capacity wagons. The higher capacity were ideal wagons for delivering coal for the boilers of many industries and town gas plant, where large quantities of coal were required daily.
20-ton capacity coal wagons became more popular in the 1930's, as the railway companies offered a better rate per ton for coal haulage in these larger wagons. The railway company gained in efficiency, moving fewer wagons needed less locomtoive power and less shunting to deliver the same weight of coal loaded in older 10-ton wagons. To assist with unloading these high-capacity wagons two doors were fitted in each side, plus end and often four bottom hatch doors.

Until 1968, fully fitted freight trains were required by law to be carry a break van at the end. The brake van provided brake functionality to help slow the train as well as acting as a space in which the trains guard could carry out additional duties such as paperwork. As a result most brake vans featured a stove and desk on top of the brake apparatus. The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) built 2653 20 ton break vans between 1933 and 1947. These featured a wooden structure that spanned most of the frame, with open covered areas at either end to provide the guard with an excellent view of the train.

Oxford Diecast OR76WW003 OO Gauge Warwell A Wagon British Steel Corporation DM748305 with Diamond Bogies

A detailed model of the depressed centre Warwell wagons built during WW2 to carry US-built Sherman tanks and other military vehicles between the factories and west coast importing ports to the embarkation ports along the south coast. The depressed centre well was needed to keep the higher vehicles inside the restricted British loading gauge, but the wagons were built with sloping end ramps and bridge plates so vehicles could be driven along the length of a train for rapid loading and unloading.
Following the invasion many of these wagons were transferred to France to keep the advancing front line supplied with replacement armoured vehicles, which would often have a low maximum road speed.

After WW2 the Ministry of Defence retained a small fleet of these wagons for moving military vehicles, some being rebuilt in the late 1970s with modern bogies and air train brakes. The remainder were passed to British Railways ownership, being used as well wagons for high or heavy loads and in engineering service.

This model is finished as a wagon with the original diamond frame bogies now fitted with bolsters to provide level supports for carrying lengths of steel, making good use of the 50-tons carrying capacity.

Detailed model of a 8 plank open coal wagon fitted with extra coke rails as operated by the Bedwas Coke company.
Coke is coal heated in the absence of air to drive off impurities, the resulting purer carbon coke burns at high temperature and is used in iron and steel making process. The coke is less dense than coal so 'coke rails' were used to increase the volume of a 12 ton coal wagon so a full 12 tons of coke could be carried.

The Minera lime company operated a fleet of these covered wagons. The peaked roof of these wagons was quite distinctive and cupboard doors are fitted in place of the usual drop-down door used on an open wagon.

Lime is used by farmers to adjust the acidity of soils to provide the best possible balance for the crop they intend to grow, so lime wagons would have been seen visiting many small goods yards across Britain with deliveries for estate farms and local agricultral supply businesses.

Detailed model of the GWR diagram O18 open merchandise wagons introduced in 1902 with higher 5 plank sides than used previously, cross-cornered DCIII spring applied hand brakes, self-contained buffers and 'sack truck' door. When new many were equipped with sheet supporting rails to keep tarpaulin covers from sagging, but these were removed from wagons as they were put into the 'common user' wagon pool. These wagons set the basic open wagon design used by the GWR until nationalisation and many survived as internal users into the 1970s, resulting in several examples being preserved.
This model is finished as Port of Bristol Authority wagon number 61110 in PBA blue livery.

Oxford Rail OR76MW6003 OO Gauge 6 Plank Wagon FJ Newton

The LNER constructed a slightly larger 6 plank bodied open wagon for general merchandise service, in place of the 5 plank body favoured by LMS and GWR companies. The LNER design used the RCH wood chassis far longer than the other companies who changed to the stronger steel frame design, resulting in the LNER wagons being quite easily identifyable. This model from Oxford Rail provides modellers with a good and detailed model of these LNER wagons for the first time.

Many open wagons would find their way into private ownership, with each company then commissioning one of the Big Four companies to move their wagons to their destination. These plank wagons are typical of the kind that could be seen making up a colourful patchwork behind one of the Big Four's freight engines. These open wagons are fitted with NEM couplings and metal wheels, allowing them to roll freely and therefore allowing them to run in long rakes behind even small locomotives as may sometimes be tasked with hauling them. These wagons also have internal plank detailing, a load need not be fitted if you do not wish to add one.

This triple pack contains wagons lettered for BW&Co, Bentley Colliery number 323, J. James or Exeter number 96 and Newstead colliery number 1110.

Coal haulage in South Wales was streamlined and made more efficient when GWR introduced the 21-ton mineral wagon in the 1920s. A few decades later, the 21-ton mineral wagon served an essential purpose in the early stages of British Railways control over the new national railway network.
This wagon is liveried in a Stephenson & Clarke eye-catching pale green. The hook couplings enable easier coupling of other rolling stock and locomotives on your layout. It features die-cast spoked wheels.
