A model of a 20-ton 9-plank open wagon operated by the Dovercourt Bay Co-operative Society.

Both the central CWS (Co-operative Wholesale Society) and many local Co-operative societies sold coal to their members. Many societies built up a large business, handling many thousands of tons of coal per year. This made high capacity wagons like this 20-ton capacity 9-plank wagon the most economical type to employ.
