Several large commercial coal consumers took up the offer of new wagons on favorable terms from the GWR to renew their fleet. The Avon Tyres company was one of these, owning a small fleet of wagons to ensure a steady supply of coal was available for their manufacturing plant.
Needing a significant quantity of coal daily the company updated their wagon fleet to use the steel 20 ton capacity wagons from the 1930s.
