Bachmann OO J G Robinson Corn Oil Tank Wagon (37-683)

A very nice model of one of the tank wagons operated by J G Robinson, a Bristol company producing vegitable oils from grain seeds.

J G Robinson used these wagons to convey edilble oils in connection with their business, which they listed on the wagon as 'seed crushers'. The company was a part of the BOCM group, but for many years operated under the J. G. Robinson name, hence the tank bears the lettering 'a branch of the British Oil & Cake Mills Ltd.'
British Oil and Cake Mills continued to operate under the group name from Avonmouth after WW2, this tank wagon being well-known in the Bristol area lettered BOCM Avonmouth and was modelled in this form by Bachmann some years ago.

Dapol OO Lowell Baldwin Ltd. 9 Plank Open Coal Wagon (4F-090-001)

A large coal factor company, Lowell Baldwin of Bristol supplied coal to many industrial consumers, justifying the purchase of these large capacity wagons. The higher capacity were ideal wagons for delivering coal for the boilers of many industries and town gas plant, where large quantities of coal were required daily.

20-ton capacity coal wagons became more popular in the 1930's, as the railway companies offered a better rate per ton for coal haulage in these larger wagons. The railway company gained in efficiency, moving fewer wagons needed less locomtoive power and less shunting to deliver the same weight of coal loaded in older 10-ton wagons. To assist with unloading these high-capacity wagons two doors were fitted in each side, plus end and often four bottom hatch doors.

Hornby OO Oakbank Oil Company 6-Wheel Tank Wagon (R6568)

Oil companies operating 6-wheel tank wagons was unusual, however there were some advantages, as these wagons could travel at higher speeds than the plodding goods trains of the steam era, This translated into quicker delivery times, a useful capability in some business sectors.

This wagon, number 40 in the Oakbank Oil Company fleet was one of these 6-wheel tank wagons. Painted in a plain black livery it is likely that the wagons was used for high value specialist oils, like lubricants and electrical oils for cooling transformers.

Hornby OO West Midlands Joint Electricity Authority 20-Ton Steel Bodied Coal Wagon (R6585)

Before the national grid electricity was generated at local power stations, often serving just one town. In the industrial cities of the West Midlands a combined authority was formed.

To supply the expanding power stations in the 1930s the authority ordered a fleet these high capacity 20-ton open wagons, often operating them as a block train between colleries and the power station. The steel bodied wagons had long lives and, as specialised wagons, remained in the electricty authoritys' ownership into the nationalised era.
The block train pattern of operation was copied by British Rail to serve the new coal fired power stations built in the 1960s.

Hornby OO Cambrian Wagon Works 21 Ton Wagon (R6586)

A detailed model of a 21-ton steel bodied open coal wagon built by the Cambrian Wagon Works at Maindy, Cardiff and painted in their own livery as an advertising wagon.

The GWR promoted the use of larger capacity wagons from the 1930s and many of these 21-ton wagons were built for hire. Cambrian were a major wagon supplier to the South Wales collieries and it is likely this wagon was built and painted for a trade show, or as a demonstrator wagon for testing by customers. In either case it is likely the wagon would have been used on short-term leases and could appear anywhere in the country with a load of coal.

The GWR promoted the use of higher capacity wagons in the South Wales coal field during the 1930s. Several colleries and coal factors took up the option of reduced bulk rates for coal hauled in these wagons in place of older 10-ton wagons and used these 21-ton types wherever possible.
