Hornby OO West Midlands Joint Electricity Authority 20-Ton Steel Bodied Coal Wagon R6585

Before the national grid electricity was generated at local power stations, often serving just one town. In the industrial cities of the West Midlands a combined authority was formed.

To supply the expanding power stations in the 1930s the authority ordered a fleet these high capacity 20-ton open wagons, often operating them as a block train between colleries and the power station. The steel bodied wagons had long lives and, as specialised wagons, remained in the electricty authoritys' ownership into the nationalised era.
The block train pattern of operation was copied by British Rail to serve the new coal fired power stations built in the 1960s.

Hornby OO Cambrian Wagon Works 21 Ton Wagon R6586

A detailed model of a 21-ton steel bodied open coal wagon built by the Cambrian Wagon Works at Maindy, Cardiff and painted in their own livery as an advertising wagon.

The GWR promoted the use of larger capacity wagons from the 1930s and many of these 21-ton wagons were built for hire. Cambrian were a major wagon supplier to the South Wales collieries and it is likely this wagon was built and painted for a trade show, or as a demonstrator wagon for testing by customers. In either case it is likely the wagon would have been used on short-term leases and could appear anywhere in the country with a load of coal.

Dapol OO Wm. Butler, Tar Distillers of Bristol Rectangular Tank Wagon 4F-032-005

Wm. Butlers' tar tanker is a well-known wagon, its' photograph is frequently used to illustrate the rectangular tank wagon design.
These tank wagons were used to collect coal tar, a by-product of coal gas production, for refining into useful chemical fractions. Butlers' tar wagons would have travelled widely to collect raw materials from gas companies, particularly around the south-west and west midlands, supplying the companys' plants at Bristol and Gloucester.

The company originates in the GWR broad gauge era, Mr Butler being appointed by Mr Brunel to run the timber treatment plant in Bristol. Later forming his own company Butlers are still operating today as suppliers of industrial oil products like heating oil.

Dapol are releasing a new version of the F H Silvey liveried wagon featuring their new 5-plank body and 9-feet wheelbase wood style chassis. This model will carry a different running number to previous releases, representing another wagon in the large fleet of this Bristol coal supplier.

Based in the Fishponds area of Bristol, home to many engineering firms including locomotive builders' Pecketts, F H Silvey operated an extensive fleet of wagons. Coal was obtained to supply both the boilers and forges of heavy industry and the homes of the workers. The wagon fleet was kept busy year-round, fetching coal from Yorkshire and Kent as well as local sources in Somerset and Gloucestershire.

The slope sided 16-ton steel minerals were a private venture design by wagon builders Charles Roberts. A number of private owners purchased wagons to this design, the steel construction being expected to have a longer service life and lower maintenance demands than wood bodied wagons.

Bachmann OO Esso Class B 20 Ton Anchor-Mounted Oil Tank Wagon 38-777

    New model.
Price To Be Advised. We will advise pricing by email when the release retail price is available.

This model features a significant detail upgrade on the older oil tank wagon models, with 'generic' design.
Cylindrical tanks were mounted to railway wagon chassis by several methods, the mouting becoming steadily more robust as designs were developed. The anchor mounting uses strong central brackets to connect the tank section with the chassis solebars in the central portion of the chassis between the axles. This design was introduced in the 1930s and a large numbe of these anchor mounted oil tanks were built before and during WW2 for the air ministry. After WW2 these wagons were sold to the oil companies, so this design of tank wagon formed the primary post-war oil wagon fleet until larger 35 and 45 ton designs appeared in the 1960s.

Dapol OO Lowell Baldwin Ltd. 9 Plank Open Coal Wagon 4F-090-001

A large coal factor company, Lowell Baldwin of Bristol supplied coal to many industrial consumers, justifying the purchase of these large capacity wagons. The higher capacity were ideal wagons for delivering coal for the boilers of many industries and town gas plant, where large quantities of coal were required daily.

20-ton capacity coal wagons became more popular in the 1930's, as the railway companies offered a better rate per ton for coal haulage in these larger wagons. The railway company gained in efficiency, moving fewer wagons needed less locomtoive power and less shunting to deliver the same weight of coal loaded in older 10-ton wagons. To assist with unloading these high-capacity wagons two doors were fitted in each side, plus end and often four bottom hatch doors.
