Hornby OO Cadbury, Bournville 6 Plank Open Wagon R6751
Hornby Railways OO Gauge R6751 Cadbury, Bournville 6 Plank Open Wagon
A nicely finished model of a 6 plank open wagon operated by the chocolatiers Cadbury to supply coal for their factory at Bournville, Birmingham.
6 plank wagons offered an increased volume capacity over the 5 plank wagon, allowing a greater load to be carried. Later the use of narrower timbers saw the 6 plank design evelove into a 7 plank wagon of similar internal dimensions.
Cadburys' Bournville site was located alongside both the canal and railway routes from Gloucestershire & Worcestershire into Birmingham. The company operated canal boats and railway wagons to ensure a steady supply of coal was available to power their factory and for their workers homes. The factory complex itself contained sidings serving the main production and storage buildings and the company employed thier own small fleet of shunting engines.
