The 16-ton minerals were already being built at nationalisation, with British Railways adding to the fleet through the 1950s, reaching a total of around 250,000 wagons. The last of these were withdrawn from service in the mid-1980s, although the civil engineers retained a small fleet as waste (eg used/dirty ballast) carriers until around 1990.
