Rectangular tanks were among the first bulk liquid rail tank wagon designs introduced in the Victorian era. Used for all liquid products, including oil, chemicals and even drinking water, circular tanks later replaced the rectangular design for new construction. The exisiting rectangular tanks continued in use, particularly for conveying coal tar, into the 1950s.
