Heljan OO English Electric DP2 Prototype Diesel Locomotive Early Green Livery (4010)
Expected Winter 2011/12 (to be confirmed)
A detailed model produced from original drawings and photographic evidence to recreate the prototype of the BR class 50 locomotives.
English Electrics' Diesel Prototype 2 (following on from DP1, the Deltic prototype) used a basic bodyshell from the production Deltic series, modified to accomodate a single 16-cylinder V form engine in place of the two deltic power units. BR engineers favoured medium speed diesel engines as these generally needed less maintenance, especially when compared to the complex Deltic power plants! DP2 failed to gain English Electric the large order for the new BR standard type 4 locomotives, the Sulzer engine and general concept of BRCWs' Lion being selected for what became class 47 with Brush as the principal builder. However a batch of diesel locomotives was needed to power services to Glasgow until electrification was completed and 50 locomotives based on DP2s machinery and built by EE, forming BR class 50.
Heljan locomotives feature a heavy diecast chassis block accomodating a central motor with flywheels and drive to both bogies. Bodyshells are accurately detailed, incorporating details from photographic evidence, providing the best possible model of these long-scrapped prototype locomotives. This model is painted in the early plain brunswick green livery.

Heljan OO BRCW Lion Prototype Type 4 Locomotive (4005)
Lion was a prototype demonstrator locomtoive built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon company at Smethwick, Birmingham in 1962 in response to BR's specification for its new standard type 4 diesel electric locomotive. Equipped with the Sulzer 12LDA engine set at 2,750bhp and electrical equipment by AEI, both companys products already familiar to British Rails' technical staff. The body styling followed the BR design panels' model painted in a striking white livery with gold bodyside stripes, rail observers reporting the sighting of a 'giant albino Hymek' due to the similarity to the Beyer Peacock locomotives' body design when observing Lion on test before official information was released.
Clearly from the basic design and engine configuration when compared to the other type 4 prototypes Lion was the prototype for the class 47 locomotives still familiar to rail enthusiasts today. Sadly however a lack of on-going orders put BRCW in financial difficulties by the early 1960s and Lion's service life was short, as it was scrapped in November 1963 while the BRCW company assets were liquidated. BR had to turn to BRCW's competitor Brush Traction, builders of the twin Maybach engined Falcon, for the class 47 build.
Heljans locomotives are powered by a motor with twin flywheels set centrally in a heavy diecast chassis and driving all six axles. This provides excellent running even at slow speeds and plenty of train-haulage capability. Bodyshells are, wherever possible, manufactured following the origianl design drawings, augmented by the photographic records of the actual locomotive to identify modifications and detail changes. A pack of optional parts is usually supplied, allowing models to be further detailed to suit requirements.

Bachmann OO BR D3986 Class 08 0-6-0 Diesel Shunter Green with Wasp Stripes (32-116A)
Diesel locomotives first appeared on shunting duties in the 1930s and the 300/350bhp English Electric engine in a solidly constructed outside framed 0-6-0 design locomotive quickly proved to be the most versatile for a general purpose shunting engine.
British Railways combined the experience of the four railway companies, producing this sturdy heavy shunting engine, later known as class 08, many of these locomotives are still serving Britains railways today.
This model of D3986 is painted in the BR green livery of the 1950s and 60s with wasp stripe ends to improve the visibility of the diesel locos.

Due to the popularity of the first sound-equiped class 08 shunter announced Hornby have scheduled a second green liveried model for December release.
The factory-fitted sound system is particularly wlecome on the 08 as these small locomotives can be difficult to fit with a DCC decoder and making space for the larger sound decoder and speakers can be challenging. The long lives of these shunting engines will make them an excellent addition to the fleet of sound-fitted locomotives for both steam and diesel enthusiasts.

Heljan OO BR D8219 Class 15 BTH Diesel Locomotive Green with Small Yellow Ends (15011)
This model of D8219 is painted in the BR green livery with small yellow warning panels.
Designed by BTH (British Thompson Houston) and built by the the Clayton and Yorkshire Engine Companies these 900bhp single cab locomotives resembled the road switcher design that had become popular in the US. This was intended to allow for easy operation and adequate visibility in either direction from one cab. In service this quickly proved the opposite, with visibility in both directions being significantly obstructed. Although more successful that some early diesel locomotive designs the Paxman engine proved unreliable in service and rationalisation or services almost eliminated work for such low powered engines. All were withdrawn by April 1972, however one example survived as a carriage heating unit and has been preserved.

Bachmann OO BR B8138 Class 20 Bo-Bo Diesel Locomotive Green Centre Head Code Box DCC Sound (32-034DS)
Fitted with an on-board DCC sound system this class 20 brings the distinctive engine sounds of this early British diesel locomotive to your layout. Sounds which gave the 20s their nkcnames of 'whistling wardrobes' refering to the turbo whistle and plethora of bodyside doors, or 'choppers' due to the distinct diesel exhaust sound, much like the sound of a helicopters' rotors.
This BR green liveried locomotive D8138 represents the later production locomotives with a central 4-character train description or headcode box. A centrally mounted motor drives all four axles via driveshafts, providing smooth running and excellent hauling capabilities. A small pack of additional parts including extra sandboxes, brake pipes and MU cables is supplied, allowing different detail configurations to be modelled. Dapol OO BR Class 22 D6319 North British Type 2 B-B Diesel Hydraulic Locomotive Split Headcode Boxes BR Green Small Yellow Panels (D1000D)
The North British 'baby warships' did not enjoy the highest profile of the Western regions' hydraulics, but performed their duties away from the limelight throughout the 1960s. This new, high specification model of the BR class 22 completes one of the missing links in the hydraulic fleet.
The Dapol model represents the later body style with split headcode boxes and will be powered by a flywheel drive mechanism with Dapols' smooth running 'super-creep' motor and 40:1 drive ratio, which has provided excellent slow-speed performance in Dapols' recent N gauge locomotives. The chassis incorporates directional lighting, a 21-pin DCC decoder socket and space for a sound system speaker has been designed into the fuel tank..

This model of D6320 will be painted in the BR green livery with small yellow warning panels.

Heljan OO BR D5902 Class 23 Baby Deltic Bo-Bo Locomotive Green Small Warning Panels (2305)
The 'Baby Deltic' was a partially successful attempt to use the Deltic engine, which was proving highly successful in the class 55 express passenger locomotives, in a smaller locomotive. Built with the typical EE nose end body styling the locomotives quite resembled the larger locomotives. Although the class 23s proved powerful and capable locomotives the Deltic power units were not well suited to the start-stop routine of suburban railway service. A review of locomotive performance by BR as a prelude to concentrating on fewer, more standard locomotive classes under the National Traction Plan brought the Baby Deltics' lives to an end in the early 1970s.
Heljan locomotives are powered by a centrally mounted motor surrounded by a heavy diecast chassis block driving both bogies. This mechanism provides smooth running and excellent train haulage capabilities.
This model D5902 carries the BR green livery with small yellow warning panels.

Bachmann OO BR D7581 Class 25/1 Bo-Bo Diesel BR Green (32-328)
The Derby type 2s spread rapidly across the BR network, displacing steam locomotives from secondary passenger and goods duties. These locomotives developed their own following later in their lives as they were in turn replaced. D7581 represents the early years of the class, painted in the BR locomotive green livery with lion and wheel crest. This locomotive has the early style of bodyshell, characterised by the large number of grilles in the sides. Bachmanns Bo-Bo drive mechanism is one of the best in the business, the centrally mounted motor drives all four axles while the heavy diecast chassis ensures this 25 will pull long trains with ease.

Bachmann OO BR D5183 Derby Type 2 Class 25/1 Green DCC Sound (32-330DS)
Bachmann's excellent new model (in 2011) of the BR Class 25 with DCC Sound on board. This model of D5183 is painted in the early BR green livery. The DCC controlled sound system produces an excellent reproduction of the real locomotives at work. These are smooth running models. The Class 25's were introduced in 1961, powered by 1250bhp Sulzer diesels and were to be found across much of the BR network.
D5183 is one of the early design class 25s, with many side grilles on the bodyshell. A style which probably looks best in the plain green paint scheme.

Bachmann OO BR D9014 The Duke fo Wellingtons' Regiment Class 55 Deltic Locomotive Two-Tone Green (32-529A)
The East Coast route has been famous as the fastest route to Scotland since the Victorian era. Seeking suitable replacements for Sir Nigel Gresleys' pacific type steam locomotives BRs' Eastern region were inpressed with the performance of the English Electric Deltic prototype.
22 of these production Deltic locomotives were built, painted in this striking two-tone green livery. These charismatic locomotives quickly gained their own following after the end of steam and Bachmanns' model captures the high set lines of the body. Inside a powerful motor sits in a heavy diecast frame with drive to both bogies delivering the stunning acceleration and speed for which the Deltics were renown.
This model of D9014 is painted in the BR two-tone green livery of the 1960s.

Bachmann OO BR E3058 Type AL5 Class 85 Electric Locomotive Electric Blue Twin Pantographs (31-676)
New model announced 2010. Delivery to be advised.
One of the early designs of 25kV electric locomotives for the West Coast mainline electrification the AL5 type was built by BR works at Doncaster. Later calssified 85 under the TOPS system these were robust and reliable locomotives which had long service lives. Surviving the initial purge of less satisfactory types when the 'second generation' class 87s were built class 85s could still be found in charge of West Coast expresses until the late 1980s. One of the classic British electric locomotives the 85 will be at home alongside the class 86, 87 and 90 locomotives available from Hornby and Heljan. Hopefully a model of the equally long-lived English Electric AL1/class 81 will follow and maybe the less successful 82, 83 and 84 classes to complete the fleet.
This model is presented in the classes' original condition with two pantographs and painted in the striking electric blue livery. DCC Ready. 21-pin decoder required for DCC operation.

Hornby OO BR (SR) 1969 Brighton Belle Pullman Train Pack Blue & Grey (R2988)
Release postponed until 2012. 1969 Brighton Belle train pack containing the two Pullman driving motor cars, one powered. Additonal Brighton Belle Pullman trailer cars are also available to recreate the full 5-car train.
This pack will contain unit number 3053, comprising car S292S and car S293S (powered) painted in the British Railways Pullman blue and grey livery.
The Brighton Belle was a named train which operated between London Victoria and Brighton and was the first electric all Pullman service in the World. The service commenced in June 1934 and continued until withdrawal in April 1972, however the service was suspended during the Second World War. There were three 5 car units designated 5BEL which were specially built for the service and were able to travel in 60 minutes the 51 miles between London and Brighton without stopping. Recently under the patronage of The Transport Trust a group was formed to restore a 5BEL unit into a fully working and operating train. Their goal is to have the train ready and in service by the London 2012 Olympics, a goal which is well within their grasp. The stunningly elegant Hornby model initially produced in two distinctive livery periods captures perfectly the opulence and style of the Brighton Belle Pullman. Each Car is lit and complete with detailed interior.

Heljan OO E79962 Waggon und Maschinenbau 4-Wheel Railbus Dark Green (8701)
New model from Heljan. Expected Spring 2011.
British Railways experimented with 4-wheeled railbus cars from a number of builders in the late 1950s. The German railways had achieved great success with these lightweight, fuel efficient railcars, providing efficient passenger service on remote branch lines with a minimum crew. The single car required a driver and guard, who could also act as conductor, collecting fares. This allowed station staffing to be reduced, trying to bring the costs back in line with the takings.
Purchased from German builders Waggon und Maschinenbau these cars were generally similar to the railbuses operated by the German railways. This model of E79962 will be painted in the later dark green livery, retaining speed whisker stripes.

Bachmann OO BR Class 105 Power Twin Diesel Multiple Unit Train BR Green with Speed Whiskers (31-536)
New version of the Cravens 105 units announced 2011.
Constructed by Sheffield train builders Cravens in response to BR orders for diesel multiple units the class 105 units had a distinctive 2-window front end.
Sets were built as 2-car units with one driving motor car and one driving trailer car and 3-car units, with two driving motor cars, one with a guards' van, flanking a trailer car. The central trailer cars were later dispensed with, converting the 3-car sets into 2-car sets with both cars powered. These 'power twin' sets offered a better power-to-weight ratio than the standard sets, very useful on routes with difficult gradients. Although the Cravens design was not perpetuated the company had built a quality product and the units ran into the 1980s, outlasting many other builders' trains.

Bachmann OO BR Derby Lightweight DMU 2-Car Unit Green with Speed Whiskers (32-516)
New model announced 2010! Bachmann Bulletin November 2011 states; 'likely to go into production shortly'.
The Derby Lightweight units were among the first types of diesel multiple unit to enter widespread service on British Railways in the 1950s. Making full use of the modern aluminium materials to craete a lightweight coach body the units could easily be propelled by compact but low-powered diesel engines being produced for buses. The design was a classic in styling, although more familiar today the use of all-round glazing, open-plan seating and the ability to see through the drivers' cabins were novel features.
Luckily, due to use by the engineering and research sections of BR, one of these units has survived, revealing the remarkably innovative construction and use of materials.
This unit will be painted in the BR green livery with speed whisker lining.

Electrically compatible with the Southern regions' EMU trains the luggage vans had the added feature of battery power, allowing the van to move onto the non-electrified dockside sidings to transfer passenger luggage directly to the ship loading conveyors. When running on the 3rd rail these vans can also haul a trailing load, resulting in occasional use to power parcels trains and at least one railtour!
This model will be painted in the original all-over EMU green livery.

Heljan OO BR D84xx NBL Class 16 Bo-Bo Diesel Locomotive (1600)
New model announced 2012 Completing the Heljan range of BR pilot scheme type 1 locomoitves is the North British design type 1, intended to become BR class 16. Fitted with the same Paxman engine and using the same off-centre cab 'road switcher' arrangement, commonly used in the US for general purpose locomotives, the design was very similar to the BTH class 15. The class 16s had a far more characterful appearance, the engine hoods appearing to be festooned with grilles and vents. Sadly, even though the similar class 15s secured a small order for BTH, in the NBL design form certainly didn't follow function. The type shared all the faults of the design (eg. visibilty) and engine (complexity and unreliability) with the class 15s, but then added a slew of their own faults. Even the concentration of both classes at Stratford shed, where fitters rapidly became familiar with the Paxman engines' foibles, failed to improve the NBL designs' reliability and the class was quietly withdrawn.
