The Sturmgeschutz III was one of the first German assault tank destroyers. The simplicity, low cost, and short time to manufacture were definitive advantages that led to large production numbers during the early years of WWII. However, the heavy Russian tank divisions soundly defeated the Sturmgeschutz III. To counter the Russian threat, the Sturmgeschutz was upgraded. A new, more powerful 75mm cannon and new armor steel plates were added. The Sturmgeschutz III name was also upgraded to the Sturmgeschutz III Ausf. G
