Bachmann OO 16T Mineral Wagon BR Grey With Top Flap Doors 37-225H

Bachmann OO 16T Mineral Wagon BR Grey With Top Flap Doors 37-225H
Bachmann model 37-225H of the BR 16-ton steel bodied mineral wagon. Each suffix letter indicates a new running number produced for this very common wagon. This version has been weathered to help recreate the battle-scars incurred by wagons in coal and mineral service.
A very good model of the standard BR 16-ton steel mineral wagon, one of the most common of the BR standard designs. Over 200,000 of these wagons were built during the 1940s and 50s to replace wooden wagons used for coal and mineral traffic, representing almost half of the traditional small size wagons built for British Railways before the change to larger, modern air-braked wagons.
These robust steel bodied wagons lasted will into the 1980s and are a key signature type for BR steam or blue diesel era layouts.

Bachmann OO BR Lowfit One Plank Wagon Bauxite Late 37-479

Bachmann OO BR Lowfit One Plank Wagon Bauxite Late 37-479
A good model of the BR single-planked lowfit wagon. These useful wagons could convey loads which required only a flat wagon to carry. This includes crated loads and road vehicles. These loads could easily be chained down, while the low sides ensured that any loose items like chain ends were retained within the wagon in transit.

Lowfit wagons were marked as unsuitable for carrying containers as they did not have the lashing rings fitted to purpose-built container flats, but railwaymen found that containers could just as easily be secured by ropes around the buffers.

Bachmann OO BR(S) 25 Ton Brake Van BR Goods Grey Weathered 38-401A

Sometimes known as Pill Box vans these guards brake vans were designed for the Southern Railway in the 1930s, showing the steady development from the short wheelbase brake vans of earlier years towards the familiar BR standard design of the 1950s. The longer wheelbase (distance between the axles) provided a better ride for the guard, also allowing an increase in the weight and therefore effectiveness of the hand brake. Side lookout duckets allowed the guard to keep an eye on the running of the train and to watch for signals which may need him to apply the brake to help bring the train to a halt.

This model is painted in the British Railways goods grey livery completed with a weathered finish.

Bachmann OO BR(W) Margam Jn Shunters Truck BR Black Weathered 38-679

A highly detailed model of the small GWR shunters trucks used to provide a place for the shunter to ride safely around goods yards, coupled to the shunting engine. The box and flat floor of the wagon provided storage space for tools and spares, including shunters poles, brake sticks, train tail lamps and spare couplings.

The Bachmann model has been designed to recreate several different designs of shunters trucks as the differences were mainly in detail design. Three versions have been displayed in Bachmanns' display cases covering designs with round turned type handrail knobs, straight angle-iron grab iron brackets and inward-angled angle-iron brackets.

This wagon is painted in the BR black livery lettered for use at the Margam Junction yard and completed with a weathered finish. This depot served the huge steel plant at Port Talbot along with the coal mines and other metal industries in the area.

Many of these relatively new vans were still in service when the change to blue livery occurred in the late 1960s/ early 1970s, the last examples surviving in service until about 1980, often travelling widely in parcels and engineers parts (ENPARTS) service.

Oxford Rail OO Warwell A Wagon Diamond Bogies BR Brown DM360331 OR76WW002

Oxford Diecast OO Warwell A Wagon Diamond Bogies BR Brown DM360331 OR76WW002

A detailed model of the depressed centre Warwell wagons built during WW2 to carry US-built Sherman tanks and other military vehicles between the factories and west coast importing ports to the embarkation ports along the south coast. The depressed centre well was needed to keep the higher vehicles inside the restricted British loading gauge, but the wagons were built with sloping end ramps and bridge plates so vehicles could be driven along the length of a train for rapid loading and unloading.
Following the invasion many of these wagons were transferred to France to keep the advancing front line supplied with replacement armoured vehicles, which would often have a low maximum road speed.

After WW2 the Ministry of Defence retained a small fleet of these wagons for moving military vehicles, some being rebuilt in the late 1970s with modern bogies and air train brakes. The remainder were passed to British Railways ownership, being used as well wagons for high or heavy loads and in engineering service.

This model is finished as a wagon with the original diamond bogies and painted in British Railways bauxite brown livery. In service with the British Railways engineering departments this wagon was originally operated by the LMS, hence the DM series number.

This model is weathered finish Warwell replicates a wagon with the original diamond frame bogies and painted in British Railways bauxite brown livery. In service with the British Railways engineering departments this wagon was originally operated by the LMS, hence the DM series number.

Bachmann Branchline OO Gauge 33-306D BR ex-GWR 20-Ton Toad Goods Guards' Brake Van BR Goods Grey Livery
A nicely detailed model of the standard GWR design of guard's brake van, with the distinctive large enclosed verandah painted in the British Railways goods grey livery.
The ex-GWR brake vans were gradually withdrawn from general use under BR ownership as the brake wheel was outside the cabin, but many continued in service on Western region anyway. This van is labelled as being allocated to Newton Abbott and being in restricted use (RU) on goods trains around it's South Devon depot.
Later the engineers found the enclosed verandahs to be most useful for the secure storage of tools etc, resulting the GWR vans being found all over the BR network well into the 1980s!

A nicely detailed model of the GWR pattern guards' brake van painted in the British railways bauxite brown colour.

The single-ended GWR brake vans were withdrawn from traffic use in the 1960s, as national agreements with the unions required access to both ends of brake vans. However hundreds of the GWR vans found a home with the engineers who appreaciated the large enclosed van section and solid-sided veranda which prevented loose items and tools from being lost 'overboard' while travelling.

Bachmann OO BR 21-ton Covered Grain Hopper Wagon Bauxite Late 38-602

Bachmann Branchline OO 38-602 BR 21-Ton Grain Hopper Wagon Bauxite
A new and detailed model of the BR design 'Grano' covered grain hopper wagon.
These steel bodied hopper wagons were first developed in the 1930s, providing an easy solution to bulk grain transport within a weatherproof, self-clearing hopper. The British Railways design incorporated  features from the most recent builds from the big 4 companies. A large fleet was constructed in the 1950s, with a substantial number still in service into the 1970s.

While the majority of the BR grain wagons were painted grey when new to identify them as not having vacuum train brakes a number of bauxite painted wagons appeared later and these can add variety to model goods trains. When BR reconsidered its' goods wagon painting scheme in the 1960s bauxite brown became the standard colour for all goods wagons so wagons being overhauled and repainted changed to the new colour. At the same time the lettering of wagons was tidied up, collecting the lettering for wagon type, load capacity, tare weight and wagon number together in a defined box painted at the bottom left corner of the wagon body. Many were also upgraded with roller bearing axleboxes and more modern Oleo pneumatic buffers at the same time, all these changes being reflected in this model.

This model is painted in the BR bauxite brown livery with boxed lettering.

Bachmann OO BR(W) Loco Dept. Shunters Truck BR Black 38-678

This wagon is painted in the BR black livery lettered for use by the locomotive department. Shunters trucks used around major motive power depot were lettered loco dept. to distinguish them from those allocated to the traffic departments.

The LNER was slow to adopt steel underframe, so while the design of the cattle wagon followed the style used by the other four major railway companies the LNER examples continued to use wood underframes. This model reflects these details, along with the solid three-part doors with hand access holes, producing an accurate OO gauge replica of the LNER cattle wagon for the first time.

The 16-ton minerals were already being built at nationalisation, with British Railways adding to the fleet through the 1950s, reaching a total of around 250,000 wagons. The last of these were withdrawn from service in the mid-1980s, although the civil engineers retained a small fleet as waste (eg used/dirty ballast) carriers until around 1990.

Bachmann OO BR COVHOP Soda Ash Covered Hopper Wagon Light Grey 38-501A

Bachmann OO BR COVHOP Soda Ash Covered Hopper Wagon Light Grey 38-501
A detailed model of the BR diagram 1/210 covered hopper (COVHOP) wagon. Developed in the 1950s these wagons provided a self-clearing hopper discharge wagon suitable for bulk powder products which required reliable weather protection. Typical loads included salt, soda ash and dry sand, all of which would be lost or damaged by wind and rain, or fail to discharge through the hopper when wet.

The model, being produced in OO 'ready to run' for the first time, boasts a variety of great prototype detail features including replicated alternative braking systems, separately attached catwalks and filler lids.

This model is painted in the light grey wagon livery and lettered for use on soda ash (Sodium Carbonate) traffic. Often these wagons would have run in groups on a fixed route, the lettering helped ensure the empty wagons were returned promptly and not reloaded with materials which might cause contamination of the soda ash.

Bachmann OO BR 21-ton Covered Grain Hopper Wagon Grey Heavily Weathered 38-600A

Bachmann Branchline OO 38-600A BR 21-Ton Grain Hopper Wagon Grey Heavily Weathered

This grey model represents the most common version of the BR grain hopper wagons, over 400 were built without train brakes and hence painted in the goods grey livery. The adaption of the existing designs to accomodate the vacuum brake was complicated by the hopper protruding below the frames. These wagons remained in service until replaced by the second and larger BR design of grain hoppers with vacuum brakes and Polybulk wagons equiped with air train brakes during the 1970s.

This model is painted in the BR grey livery and carries the early style of lettering.

Oxford Rail OO BR ex-LNER Large Cattle Wagon BR Bauxtite E151872 OR76CAT001B
Oxford Rail OO Gauge OR76CAT001B BR ex-LNER Cattle Wagon BR Bauxite
A detailed model of the LNER design cattle wagon painted in British Railways goods bauxite livery.

Oxford Rail OO Gauge OR76MW6002B BR ex-LNER 6 Plank Open Merchandise Wagon British Railways Goods Grey.
The LNER constructed a slightly larger 6 plank bodied open wagon for general merchandise service, in place of the 5 plank body favoured by LMS and GWR companies. The LNER design used the RCH wood chassis far longer than the other companies who changed to the stronger steel frame design, resulting in the LNER wagons being quite easily identifyable. This model from Oxford Rail provides modellers with a good and detailed model of these LNER wagons for the first time.

Oxford Rail OO BR ex-GWR 6 Wheel Toad Brake Van Plated Sides Bordesley Junction OR76TOA003

Oxford Rail OO Gauge OR76TOA003 BR ex-GWR 6 Wheel Toad Goods Train Brake Van Plated Sides BR Grey Bordesley Junction

These 6-wheeled goods train brake vans were built in the early 1900s in response to the need for greater braking force for the longer, heavier goods trains being hauled by the newest 2-6-0 and 2-8-0 goods engines. In addition to increasing weight from 16 to 24 tons a third axle was added to increase the brake force available. The new vans were initially allocated to the heaviest trains to help the the crew control the 80+ wagons a Churchward 28xx class engines (introduced from 1903) could haul.
The railway companies later settled on 20 tons as the optimum weight for goods train brake vans and the GWR commenced their long line of very similar long-wheelbase 4-wheeled vans.

The 6 wheeled vans continued to serve, many being fitted with robust metal sheathing for the lower body sides and surviving into the British Railways era. Their allocation became more widespread, often being used to provide depots with an extra-heavy brake van for use when it was needed and some were allocated to country branch lines with steep gradients to help the guard control the train in event of a broken coupling.

The Oxford Rail model has been designed to incorporate several of the changes made to these vans over their long lives. This model finished in later condition with steel-sheathed sides to the van and veranda finished in early British Railways grey livery.
Bordesley Junction was a major goods interchange point in Birmingham, originally a junction on the Grand Union Canal with the Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal the Midland Railways' Camp Hill line connects with the GWR Birmingham to London line at this point. Goods trains were received and despatched daily at Bordesley, serving destinations all over the West Midlands, south to London and north to Chester and Birkenhead.

Situated just north of Birmingham the city of Wolverhampton was the destination for many trains into the West Midlands, especially for traffic between the West Midlands and destinations to the north. Wolverhampton vans would have travelled great distances with trains being formed up to run direct to other cities served by the GWR.
