These wagons were numbered in the companys' own sequence, with the BR registration number on oval yellow plates bolted to the solebar.

A good model of these steel bodied vans which were specially built and fitted with secure doors for the transport of explosives.

Originally this was principally gunpowder and frequently used to transport explosives for mines and quarries, this name was retained for use on these vans long after other exploseives were developed. During peacetime the cargoes included all kinds of explosives and potentially explosive material, plus ammunition deliveries for reserve and cadet units across Britain.

The single-ended GWR brake vans were withdrawn from traffic use in the 1960s, as national agreements with the unions required access to both ends of brake vans. However hundreds of the GWR vans found a home with the engineers who appreaciated the large enclosed van section and solid-sided veranda which prevented loose items and tools from being lost 'overboard' while travelling.

British Railways inherited thousands of coal wagons from the ministry of transport, these having been requisitioned during WW2 for pool use. Many of these elderly wooden wagons were not fit for further service. Those wagons still in good condition were overhauled and repainted in goods grey, surviving through the 1950s until replaced by new-built wagons.

A new model of the War Department Warflat bogie flat wagon designed to convey heavy military vehicles during WW2. Using heavy fishbelly side framing loads up to 50 tons could be carried, including many of the light tanks and infantry support vehicles. The wagons featured screw jacks under the headstocks, allowing heavy vehicles to be driven on from an end loading dock and tracked vehicles could easily cross from one wagon to the next, driving down the entire length of a train.

Being substantially built these vehicles continued in service after WW2. BR examples were used to convey heavy loads, including large steel fabrications and castings. The MoD retained many wagons for military use, with a small fleet being rebuilt and updated with modern bogies, fittings and air brakes in the 1980s.

This model is painted in post war British Army bronze green and supplied with a model tank load.

The last regular milk trains ran from Devon and Cornwall to London. These fast and important trains were often entrusted to the powerful Western class diesel hydraulics until that class was replaced by class 47 and 50 locomotives in the mid-70's.

Hornby have announced a new, fine scale model of the well-known blue-spot express fish vans.

The development of these vans was started by the LNER, providing a wgaon type vehicle with longer wheelbase, better suited to running long distances at passenger train speeds, as was desirable to deliver fresh fish from the ports of the North East to markets in London with a minimum of delay.
The British Railways design was the largest of the type, with clean sides and wheels almsot at the corners of the body.
Following the loss of much of the fish traffic to road transport BR used many of these relatively new vans into parcels service.
