While many suburban coaches were built in sets the GWR also built some 'loose' coaches which could be used to strengthen (lengthen) trains at times of peak demand, or be formed into extra trains when required.

From the 1930s road omnibuses could often provide quicker service to market towns than the railways, where often a change of train would be needed. Declining passenger numbers often saw minor branch lines' trains reduced to just one coach, making the single brake third of brake composite coaches very useful to provide passenger service on a small layout.
