Airfix 1/48 Messerscmitt BF109f Fighter Aircraft Kit (04101)

The Messerschmitt Bf109E was considered in advance of rival types in the Polish, Dutch, Belgian and French Air Forces at the beginning of WWII, but met its match when flown against the RAF's Spitfires and Hurricanes. The quest for greater performance gave rise to the Bf109F the prototype of which first flew in July 1940.

Of all the 109 versions produced, the introduction of the upgraded "F" was thought to mark the peak of development, and was considered by many to have been the best of the breed, although subsequent versions G through K took performance improvements still further. The German pilots of the Luftwaffe squadrons now enjoyed a marked superiority over the RAF's Spitfire VB's along the English Channel coast in 1941. In its production F-1 and F-2 form, the new aircraft had the more powerful 1,200 h.p. Daimler-Benz DB 601N engine. Armament comprised a new 20mm cannon plus 2 x 79 mm machine guns above the engine. The later Bf109F-4's featured a 1,350 h.p. DB 601E engine allowing a maximum speed of 394.6 m.p.h. (635 km/h) at 19,865 ft. (6,054 m), and could climb to 32,800 ft (9,997 m) in 13.7 minutes!
