After the collapse of the 70 battle tank project, a joint development with the USA, in 1969 the Federal German Department of Defence and Procurement placed an order with the firms Krauss-Maffei, Porsche and Wegmann for the development of a successor to the Leopard 1, the Leopard 2. In 1972 the firms approached were able to begin building the first chassis and turrets, in order to test various components in different configurations. In 1977 Krauss-Maffei submitted the most favourable tender and was awarded the contract for the construction of a total of 1,800 tanks. In autumn 1979 the first production Leopard 2 tanks were handed over to the Federal German Army. The 47.6 litre MTU MB 873-Ka 501 water-cooled 12-cylinder turbo-diesel engine delivered 1,500 hp and gave the tank a maximum speed of 72 km/h. The Leopard 2 A4 was also used in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden and Spain. | |
