With the BTR-70 (East German army designation: armoured infantry vehicle SPW-70) the mechanized infantry units (armoured infantry) have a fast all-terrain vehicle equipped with a high dismount capability and good armament. It takes the mechanized infantry close to the enemy in safety and they can then dismount through a hatch between the 2nd and 3rd wheels or fire at external targets through firing ports. The BTR-70 was widely distributed in the Soviet Union and its successor states and from 1979 onwards the East German army received 1266 vehicles of this type. After the dissolution of the East German army these saw service with the UN in the Balkans.
