Alfred Moss and Stirling's manager Ken Gregory approached Mercedes team manager Alfred Neubauer with the suggestion that young Moss might be considered for a place in the team, but Neubauer was not convinced. He wanted to see Stirling at the wheel of a fully-fledged Formula 1 car before making such a decision. As a result, with the generous support of BP, Moss acquired a Maserati 250F and set out to prove himself to Neubauer.
By the time the brilliant young English driver had dominated the Italian Grand Prix, his private Maserati pulling away from Fangio's Mercedes until it was sidelined due to failing oil pressure, Neubauer was convinced. Moss was welcomed into the Mercedes fold in 1955 and duly won his first Grand Prix at Aintree.
