The world economic crisis at the beginning of the 1930s let to a merger between the motor manufacturers Horch, Audi, DKW and Wanderer. In 1932 they combined to enter a better period under the name "Auto-Union". The two litre six cylinder Audi they developed together in 1933 was a success, to which the motor sports victories gained for Auto-Union by Hans Stuck and Bernd Rosemeyer contributed. In 1950 they began producing cars of the DKW "Master" Class and three years letter the fifty thousandth post-war DKW rolled off the line. This was followed in 1953 by the DKW "Special" Class and in 1955 by the KDW 3.6. This latter visually resembled the Auto-Union 1000, however it had a 1000 cc more powerful engine. It differed in appearance in that it had a panorama windscreen and the four shining Auto-Union rings across the radiator grille. The Auto-Union 50 bhp 1000 S Coup 1958 reached a top speed of 135 km/h at 4,500 rpm and sprinted from 0 to 100 in 24 seconds. Over 16,000 customers were persuaded to lay out all of 7,125 DM (about 3640 Euros) for one of the handsomest four ring models at the motor show.
