The Sentinel company received several awards for this excellent shunting locomotive. All aspects of the locomotive had been considered by the designers. Using a reliable Roll-Royce engine, a hydraulic transmission system based on common industrial and heavy goods vehicle systems combined with a simple 4-wheel chain drive system provided a mechanical product which could be maintained by lorry fitters.
Ergonomical and safety design included a central drivers' control desk with duplicated controls allowing driving from either side in either direction. The side walk-ways provided the driver with an excellent view of the ends of the locomotive, right down to the buffers, giving a clear view while approaching wagons. The shunters' safety was also considered, deep recessed platforms being provided for staff to ride on the locomotive, protected by the substantial buffer beam.
