Designed and built during WW2 these engines featured many economies in manufacturing, with the boiler casing being squared off and wheel splashers and running plate eliminated. The engines proved quite capable for all their unorthodox looks, able to run at a good speed and handle the many light merchandise trains operated across the Southern counties where there was only a limited need for heavy mineral trains.
