Hornby OO BR Thompson/Peppercorn K1 Class 2-6-0 BR Black Early Emblem R3242

Hornby OO BR Thompson/Peppercorn K1 Class 2-6-0 BR Black Early Emblem R3242
The K1 class was introduced in 1949 for service on the Highland lines. The engines were a further development of the earlier K4 locomotives, Thompson took the opportunity to simplify the engines to a 2-cylinder arrangement, however much of the work on this class was undertaken by A H Peppercorn before he took over from Thomson as chief engineer.

The 2-6-0 arrangement was used to provide a powerful, modern locomotive with the extra traction available from the 3 driving axles but within the weight and length constraits applicable to the Mallaig line bridges and turntables. One example of the class is preserved and has been operated regularly on the scheduled summer steam excursions between Fort William and Mallaig.

Hornby OO BR 61646 Gilwell Park Class B17/6 4-6-0 BR Lined Green Early Emblem R3318

Hornby OO BR 61646 Gilwell Park Class B17/6 4-6-0 BR Lined Green Early Emblem R3318
By the mid 1920s there was a critical need for locomotives suitable for the increasing passenger traffic on the Great Eastern District (formerly Great Eastern Railway) but track limitations prevented the transfer of locomotives from other regions. Nigel Gresley was required by the LNER to produce a 4-6-0 design to supplement the existing Holden designed B12 locomotives serving that region. Initial specifications were for a three cylinder 4-6-0 which borrowed the cylinder and motion arrangement of the D49 4-4-0 with a tractive effort of approximately 25,000lbs and a restricted axle loading of 17 tons but was eventually increased to 18 tons. The Doncaster Works had many problems meeting the design specifications and the contract was eventually awarded to the North British Locomotive Company (Glasgow) in December 1927.

The final design of the Gresley designed B17s incorporated many features of the A1 Pacifics built in 1924 but several key modifications were required before the first B17 was delivered in late 1928. Between the years of 1930 and 1937 Robert Stephenson & Co. at Darlington and Glasgow produced a total of 73 B17s.

Continuous modifications throughout the building programme resulted in four sub classes B17/1 ? B17/4. One of the many teething problems suffered by the Class included cracked frames and an attempt to cure this resulted in the B17/2 sub class which had lighter driving axlebox springing and stiffer bogie springs, however the problems still continued. Further modifications included horn blocks in place of guides on the middle axle resulting in another sub class, B17/3. Despite further attempts to improve their springs the Class was always considered to be a ?rough rider?.

The final B17s to be built, B17/4 were intended for routes with fewer length restrictions and therefore were coupled to 4,200 gallon LNER Group Standard tenders. The Holden designed B17s of which there were three sub classes were merged in 1937 becoming B17/1 locomotives and were coupled to 3700 gallon GE tenders. Between 1943 and 1958, 55 of the Class underwent further modifications, including the fitting of Diagram 100A boilers creating yet another sub class, B17/6. The first 47 of the Class were named after English Country Houses with the majority of those remaining being named after football teams resulting in the Class being known as ?Sandringhams? or ?Footballers?.

Locomotive 2846, ?Gilwell Park? was outshopped on the 23rd August 1935 from the LNER Darlington Works. On passing to BR in 1948 the locomotive?s number was changed to 61646 and was one of the Class that was modified from being a B17/1 to a B17/6 in February 1951. After nearly 24 years service the locomotive was withdrawn on the 9th January 1959 and was cut up at the BR Doncaster Works later that month. Unfortunately there are none of the Class preserved.

Hornby OO LNER 635 J50 Class 0-6-0T Shunting Engine LNER Black R3324

Hornby Railways R3324 LNER 635 J50 Class 0-6-0T Shunting Engine LNER Black

Expected January 2016

A new model of the LNER class J50 0-6-0T heavy shunting engines with their distinctive slope-front tanks and access slot.
Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the Great Northern the class was selected as the LNERs' 'group standard' heavy shunting engine. Like most companys' large shunting engines the J50s were used on a range of duties including local goods trains and some suburban passenger services, though as the LNER was well supplied with medium-sized locomotives the J50s were not used on country branchlines as extensively as their GW and LMS equivilents.

This model will be a very useful addition to the LNER locomotive fleet, filling an important role with a modern, high detail model.

Hornby OO LNER A4 Class Silver Jubilee Collection Set of 4 Locomotives R3337

The Silver Jubilee Collection - 80th Anniversary Limited Edition Set - R3337

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the introduction of the first LNER Class A4 locomotives, we're proud to present a limited edition set of four silver LNER 4-6-2 Class A4 locomotives. In 1935 the first four A4 locomotives, which had been specifically built to haul a new streamlined service between London, Kings Cross and Newcastle, left the LNER Doncaster Workshops.

The first A4 was named Silver Link, which had been inspired by a line from Sir Walter Scott?s poem, 'The Lay of the Last Minstrel'. The second A4 was Quicksilver, the third Silver King and the fourth Silver Fox, this locomotive claiming the speed record for a regular passenger train for the Silver Jubilee train at 113mph.
All four locomotives were painted in silver/grey livery to match the Silver Jubilee trains' streamlined coaches. The Silver Jubilee service ran for four years but was cancelled at the outbreak of the Second World War and not reinstated.

Each Silver Jubilee A4 locomotive in the Collection has been produced as a limited edition in specially commissioned individual packaging and is complete with an authenticating certificate - each of the collection of four will contain the same numbered certificate.

Hornby Railways OO Gauge R3414 LNER 5444 J15 Class ex-GER 0-6-0 Small Goods Engine LNER Black
A detailed model of the LNER class J15 0-6-0 goods engine finished as LNER 5444 in plain black livery.
The Hornby model nicely captures the simple lines of these long-lived locomotives, complete with their Victorian-era domed boilers. Close attention has been paid to detailing, producing a characterful model of these signature GER locomotives, which lasted in British Railways service until 1962.
Locomotive 5444 was built at Stratford Works under Order X45 and entered traffic during July 1899 as NER No.644. Renumbered to LNER No.7644 following Grouping, in September 1946 the locomotive was renumbered to 5444. The locomotive spent its working life being allocated between Stratford and Colchester sheds and made it through to Nationalisation in 1948, taking the BR No.65444, finally being withdrawn in October 1958 and cut up in January 1959.

Hornby Railways OO Gauge R3461 BR 67702 Thompson L1 Class 2-6-4T LNER Apple Green

This model of BR 67702 is painted in the early nationalisation compromise livery of LNER apple green with LNER lettering while carrying the new British railways number 67702.

The Thompson L1 class were powerful tank engines introduced into service on the LNER in 1945. These were 2-6-4 wheel arrangement, popular for large tank engines in suburban service and comparable to the Stanier, Fowler, Fairburn and BR standard designs.

Built at Darlington Works as Works No. 2020, L1 No. 67702 entered service at 30A Stratford Shed on January 22, 1948, in LNER livery and numbered as 9001. Re-numbering under the British Railways? scheme followed shortly after, on May 15, 1948 but curiously the locomotive retained its LNER branding and green livery until its first general repair in mid-November 1948. 67702 was the first of the class to be withdrawn, on October 31, 1960, at Darlington Works.

Hornby OO BR 62024 Thompson/Peppercorn K1 Class 2-6-0 BR Black Late Crest R3243

Bachmann Branchline 31-567 LNER V2 Class 2-6-2 60881 BR Green Late Crest

The Gresley V2 locomotives were among the most powerful British steam locomotives, but always seemed to suffer in terms of maximum speed against the essentially similar pacific type locomotives. A small number of the locomotives were fitted with an improved exhaust system and double chimneys in the BR period, transforming high speed performance. These double chimney V2s were now able to stand in for the pacific types and even the new Deltic diesels to keep the East Coast expresses running on time.

60862 was one of the double chimney fitted locomotives and is modelled by Bachmann in this format and painted in the later BR lined brunswick green express passenger livery.
Powered by the proven Bachmann chassis and motor providing good slow running and realistic top speed.

DCC Ready. 21-pin decoder required for DCC operation.

Hornby Railroad R3171  LNER 2001 Cock O The North P2 Class 2-8-2 Mikado Express Passenger Engine

The first to arrive of Hornbys' latest and stunning model - the Gresley P2, is the Railroad version where the emphasis is on durable use. The result is a handsome model that can stand handling on working layouts without the damage possible  to the fine detail and etched parts of the collectors' versions. An excellent basis for super detailing to individual requirements.

The LNER was looking for locomotives that could handle heavy express passenger work over the steep and arduous lines between Edinburgh and Aberdeen.  The 2-8-2 Mikado Class P2 locomotives were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, with the first of the class of six, "Cock Of the North" being introduced to traffic in 1934. Plates for a new build locomotive have actually been cut for assembly by the Doncaster P2 Trust.

Hornby Railways OO Gauge R3417 BR 62065 Thompson/Peppercorn K1 Class 2-6-0 BR Black Late Crest

    Expected February 2016.

This model is finished as BR 62065 in British Railways lined black livery with later lion holding wheel crest.

Hornby OO LNER Class D16/3 'Claud Hamilton' 4-4-0 R3433

Hornby Railways OO Gauge R3433 LNER 4-4-0 D16/3 Claud Hamilton Class

A popular and successful design of 4-4-0 tender engine, the first of the Great Eastern Railway class S46 locomotives, No.1900 Claud Hamilton, left Stratford Works in March 1900 and was, at that point, the largest express locomotive on the GER. The design of the class is often credited to James Holden, Superintendent of the GER at the time, but he was out of the country during this period and it was actually Stratford Works? Chief Draughtsman, Frederick V. Russell, who was responsible for most of the design work.

An order for an additional forty locomotives followed, built between 1900 and 1903, which were classified by the GER as S46 (later to be re-classified as Class D14 by the London North Eastern Railway). Very quickly the class became known as ?Clauds? and further batches were produced between 1904 and 1911, these were fitted with Belpaire boilers and classified as D56 (which were later to become Class D15). The final batch of ten engines, this time classified by the GER as H88, were built just after Grouping and fitted with 5? 1? diameter superheated Belpaire boilers, leading to them being aptly named ?Super Clauds? and classified as Class D16 by the LNER.

Out of the 121 locomotives built, 117 ?Clauds? made it to Nationalisation in 1948 and by 1949, when rebuilding of the class ceased, 104 engines had been converted to D16/3. The withdrawal of the D16/3 class actually commenced in 1945, but they were still being used quite extensively on the Eastern region, even making it up to Cheshire. From 1955, the rate of withdrawal increased and No.62613 was the last to be withdrawn, from March Shed, in October 1960. None, sadly, were preserved.

Locomotive No.1900 was the only one of its class to be named, taking the name Claud Hamilton after the company?s Chairman. Starting life as a S46 (D14), Claud Hamilton went through all the changes and modifications experienced by the class, finally becoming a D16/3 in May 1936. Renumbered four times, Claud Hamilton spent most of its life allocated to Stratford Shed, apart from a week in September 1930 and six months at Colchester during 1940. Upon being withdrawn from service on May 27, 1947, the nameplates were then transferred to No.2546, until that locomotive was scrapped in 1957.

The first of the class was names Sprigbok to mark a visit to the UK by Jan Smuts, then Prime Minster of South Africa and many of the early members of the class were given the names of other species of antelope.

During the British Railways era the B1 class engines travelled widely, being extensively used on cross-country and inter-regional services.

    Expected May 2017

By the mid 1920's there was a critical need for locomotives suitable for the increasing passenger traffic on the GE District (formerly Great Eastern Railway) but track limitations prevented the transfer of locomotives from other regions. Nigel Gresley was required by the LNER to produce a 4-6-0 design to supplement the existing B 12 locomotives serving that region. Initial specifications were for a three-cylinder 4-6-0, borrowing the cylinder and motion arrangement of the D49 4-4-0 but with a tractive effort of about 25,000lb and restricted axle loading of 17 tons_ The Doncaster Works had many problems meeting the specifications and the contract was given to the North British Locomotive Company (Glasgow) in December 1927. The eventual axle loading was 18 tons.
