Bachmann have designed their tooling for the ROD locomotives to allow for the GWR boiler fittings, including Swindon-pattern chimney, safety valve cover and top feed. This replicates the major and externally visible alterations made to the 'stock' locomotive by the GWR. This model will be finished in the BR black with early lion over wheel emblem.

During the later stages of WW1 these Robinson 2-8-0 locomotives were being built for the War Department, intended for service on military trains. Many were never issued and were offered for sale to the British railway companies (at a very good price aparantly) after the armistice.

The GWR purchased in total 100 of these ROD locomotives, some stored from new and some which the company was already using. In the long term 50 locomotives in the best condition were overhauled and equiped with standard GWR fittings, giving many years of service with the last withdrawn about 1957. The remaining locomotives provided a good pool of spares and tenders which were used with several other classes, including the 2251 Collett Goods
