The GWRs' 64xx class of locomotives were designed specifically to provide a locomotive for push-pull 'auto train' working which delivered more power than the 0-4-2 tank engines. The engines met the operating departments requirements for up to four trailer coaches to be hauled during peak hours and for introducing the more economical auto-train working over routes with stiffer gradients than the 4-coupled engines could manage.
The addition of this locomotive to the Bachmann range nicely complements the 57xx/8750 class shunting engines to further increase the variety of GWR branchline motive power. Bachmann are also producing a model of one of the later design of auto trailer coaches to complement these engines.
This model of 6422 is painted in the early BR plain black livery with early lion over wheel emblem, which it is believed this locomotive carried until withdrawn. Eras 4-5, 1948-1965
