Hornby OO BR(W) 7023 Penrice Castle Double Chimney Castle Class 4-6-0 BR Lined Green Late Crest R3118
A highly detailed model of a British Railways built Castle class locomotive from the late period of Great Western steam.
This model of 7023 Penrice Castle features the Swindon design double chimney, fitted to the locomotive along with the revised, high superheat boiler in 1958. These modifications improved the boilers' performance, providing the Castle class locomotives with an extra reserve of power and the ability to perform their work efficiently using poorer grades of coal. The model is painted in the later BR lined brunswick green livery applied from 1957, along with the later lion and wheel crest.
7023 Penrice Castle was built under British Railways to the former GWR design, completed in June 1949 and sent to Cardiff Canton shed. The locomotive was still based at Cardiff Canton when the double chimney was fitted in May 1958 and when allocations were recorded at the end of 1959. 7023s final shed was Oxley (Wolverhampton) where the locomotive was withdrawn from service in February 1965.
