In the protracted fighting in Vietnam, with constant threats from guerilla attacks springing from any direction, GIs developed their heavily armed “gun trucks”. These gun trucks protected vulnerable convoys, and offered increased protection and firepower for their occupants. This tradition lives on in Iraq. With threats from small-arms fire, RPGs and IEDs, American troops resorted to the expedient of adding armor to many of their vehicles. Dragon’s newest M998 “Gun Truck” is precisely one such vehicle. The basic HMMWV has had steel plates added around the rear cargo compartment, while an M60 machine gun with armored shield has been mounted in the cargo bed. he Jagdpanzer IV L/70 was a modified version of the original tank hunter, being based on the Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. H or J tank chassis. It was fitted with a 75mm PaK 42 L/70 gun without a muzzle brake and a solitary MG42. The main gun could traverse 12˚ to the left and right and it had an elevation of -7˚ to +15˚. Dragon Armor has released this next Jagdpanzer IV L/70 Late Production version, representing a vehicle from an unidentified unit. It is adorned in a three-tone camouflage scheme consisting of bold stripes and is tastefully weathered, as demonstrated by the lifelike look of the tracks. The 1/72 scale model is fitted with a full set of side skirts and has the late style of exhaust muffler. Collectors will want to be cognizant of the fact that, like the previous model, this is a strictly limited edition. The U.S. Army’s M2/M3 Bradley family is one of the world’s most famous infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) and it has successfully participated in such operations as Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Perhaps not quite so well known is the M6 Linebacker variant of the Bradley. The M6 is an air-defense vehicle found in heavy armoured divisions and it mounts four FIM-92A Stinger missiles in the launcher unit on the left of the turret instead of the two TOW missiles in a regular Bradley. The Linebacker system employs a FAAD (Forward Area Air Defense) C3I suite that allows firing while stationary or on the move. Ten spare Stinger missiles are carried inside the vehicle. The 29.9-ton M6 still retains the standard turret armament of an M242 25mm Bushmaster cannon and 7.62mm M240C coaxial machine gun but the easiest recognition feature remains the turret-mounted missile launcher unit. What sets this SU-85M apart is the magnificent winter whitewash camouflage scheme. In some places the underlying base coat of green is beginning to show through on vehicle number “281”. This realistically worn look can be seen on such detailed parts as the gun barrel muzzle and the road wheel hubs. Dragon have brought us an unusual tank model with this version of the experimental Maus, fitted with a mock turret, simulating the weight of the turret during testing of the chassis. The model represents a tank fighting on the Eastern Front in 1943, though the unit is unidentified. As it’s fighting in the winter, it has received a rather haphazard and quick wash of white paint from its crew. There are other particular production features such as the handrail along the top of the hull and the early production rubber-tired pressed steel wheels. Thanks primarily to its cast-turret, this particular model has a quite different look to its Dragon Armor brethren. The Jagdpanzer IV is not new to the expanding Dragon Armour range, but this latest incarnation is! Item 60261 features an L/70 Late Production variant fighting in Germany in 1945 in the final months of WWII. There are several things that make this particular 1/72 scale model stand out from its peers. The most obvious is the stunning paint scheme – it consists of a white winter whitewash broken up with mottled sand color patches. This vehicle also has a new style of exhaust muffler characteristic of a Late Production derivative, plus a complete set of Schurzen side skirts is installed. The pre-assembled model is tastefully and realistically weathered. The other thing of particular interest to collectors is that this vehicle is being produced in strictly limited quantities. A new Jagdtiger model has been announced in the Dragon Armor range, it portrays a Henschel Production version, though this time with a different three-colour camouflage scheme. This version has the anti-mine coating Zimmerit applied and has a crane installed on the roof, a device used to raise the roof plate to allow maintenance of the interior. With it's 12.8cm PAK44 L/55 gun, it was a formidable opponent on the battlefield. It is uncertain what unit this vehicle belongs to even though there were only two schwere Panzerjager Abteilung Jagdtiger units ever formed. It is known that this tank destroyer saw combat in Austria in 1945. Only 77 of these behemoths were produced between July 1944 and March 1945 but fortunately this model is much more widely available! | |

Dragon Armor has just released its second Sd.Kfz.251/7 Ausf.C model. This was a specialist version designed for use by assault engineers, and it is easily distinguished by the fittings on both sides of the hull for carrying bridge sections. These could be used for crossing small ditches or obstacles that littered the Kursk battlefield, where Russia had prepared its defenses in depth. This fine 1/72 scale vehicle is painted in a two-tone camouflage scheme typical of the period. Details are accurate and well proportioned, and this vehicle from Kursk would make an attractive acquisition for any collection. | |

This 1/72 scale model represents an M4A3 105mm of the 6th Armored Division fighting in Luxembourg in 1945. The 6th Armored Division “Super Sixth” was a spearhead of Patton’s all-conquering Third Army, and the division helped relieve Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. This superb model is painted in a highly attractive winter camouflage scheme, with a large yellow “15” tactical number visible on the hull sides. This paint scheme is ideal for enabling the M4A3 to lurk in concealment amongst the thick forests of the Ardennes as it supports GIs. This 1/72 scale model represents a U.S. Army M4A3 105mm howitzer the 8th Tank Battalion of the 4th Armored Division. This division is distinguished by the fact that it never adopted an official nickname, though the Germans referred to it as “Roosevelt’s Butchers”! The division landed at Utah Beach on 11 July 1944, and combat operations began on the 17th. It was used as an exploitation force for Operation Cobra, the U.S. breakout from Normandy. In August 1944 it swung south to take Nantes, thus cutting off the Brittany Peninsular. This superb model is painted in a highly attractive camouflage scheme as it supports GIs clearing German defenders from the peninsular. Detail on this scale model is superb, with even the smallest and finest elements well represented. The tank is enhanced by the weathering and dry-brushing effects. As WWII drew to an irrevocable end in 1945, Germany’s panzer forces were scraping the barrel in terms of the armoured vehicles it could field. One such example is the Tiger I represented in Dragon Armor’s latest release. It portrays a hybrid Tiger, an early version retrofitted with steel wheels. It belonged to Feldwebel Beloff and was part of the ad-hoc Tiger-Gruppe Fehrmann formation formed in the spring of 1945. This Tiger was actually blown up by its crew on 11 April 1945 as Russian forces closed in on it. Tiger-Gruppe Fehrmann was a hotchpotch of Tiger tanks collected together in Fallingbostel. To give some semblance of regularity the unit’s mix of tanks was painted in an unusual slate gray colour, with green and brown patches of their older camouflage schemes still poking through. This 1/72 scale Tiger tank from Dragon Armor perfectly captures the look of such a late-war vehicle, particularly in its unique paint scheme. Details are carefully reproduced with accuracy uppermost in the minds of the designers. This is a fine model of a rare Tiger with a most extraordinary history behind it. | |

Also known as the “Tiger Division”, this armoured division served under General George S. Patton. It fought in the Allied offensive that swept into Germany, with the division ending the war in Innsbruck after driving into the famed “Redoubt”. The U.S. Army’s M2/M3 Bradley family is one of the world’s most famous infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) and it has successfully participated in such operations as Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Perhaps not quite so well known is the M6 Linebacker variant of the Bradley. The M6 is an air-defense vehicle found in heavy armoured divisions and it mounts four FIM-92A Stinger missiles in the launcher unit on the left of the turret instead of the two TOW missiles in a regular Bradley. The Linebacker system employs a FAAD (Forward Area Air Defense) C3I suite that allows firing while stationary or on the move. Ten spare Stinger missiles are carried inside the vehicle. The 29.9-ton M6 still retains the standard turret armament of an M242 25mm Bushmaster cannon and 7.62mm M240C coaxial machine gun but the easiest recognition feature remains the turret-mounted missile launcher unit. | |
