The Royal Mail began moving the post by rail as soon as an effective inter-city rail connection had been established, the train being much faster, more reliable and less susceptible to unlawful interception than horse-drawn mail coaches. Rail facilities for mail distribution developed quickly into a network of overnight Travelling Post Office mail trains with sorting coaches allowing postmen to sort mail for individual towns while on the move and collection/delivery apparatus to pickup and deliver mailbags at smaller stations without stopping.

Featuring a GWR 0-4-0 tank engine to haul the train along with the GWR TPO mail coach one passenger coach is provided for overnight travellers and the train guard.
The train set is completed with an oval of track, plus track extension pack A allowing a siding to be added. The trains is controlled by a UK mains powered speed controller using a wall-plug type transformer. Track mat supplied measures 1600 x 1180mm, (5ft.3in x 3ft.10.5in).
