During the 1980s a batch of the highly versatile class 37 locomotives were given life-extension overhauls and fitted with extra generators to supply electricity for train heating. These class 37/4 locomotives were sent to South Wales for services to the Midlands and Bristol, and to Scotland for Highland line services.
37422 was one of the group sent to Wales, most of which received names related to the principality. Glaswigian Robert F Fairlie is best known for his twin-bogie steam locomotives, a design with is closely associated with the Festiniog Railway in North Wales.
This model carries the blue and white striped Regional Railways livery, based on the livery style initiated by InterCity.
