Designed and built by the famous Beyer Peacock company the Hymek filled the type 3 power range slot in the Western region diesel hydraulic fleet. The Maybach MD870 engines, set to supply 1,740 bhp at 1500 rpm, were mostly built at Bristol Siddeley's Ansty (Coventry) engine plant and this was coupled with a Mekydro transmission, supplied principally by J. Stone, although a number of engines and transmissions were supplied from Germany. The design did not require any special weight reduction measures, allowing the use of a conventionally constructed bodyshell and use of the proven Commonwealth type bogies.
Following the elimination of the weakest parts found during the inevitable teething troubles the Hymeks quickly proved to be highly capable locomotives and one of the best hydraulic designs. The well matched engine and transmission provided excellent traction at low speed and a top speed suitable for many secondary express trains.
Four members of the class have survived into preservation.
