Part of the Kriegmarine's plan to have a navy to match that of Great Britain, the aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin was laid down on December 28, 1936 in the Deutsche Werke yard in Kiel. Control of the project was disputed between the Kriegsmarine and the Luftwaffe and construction was slow. After the outbreak of World War II, the project was abandoned in May 1940 with the ship 85% complete, parly as a result of Hitler's decision to concentrate on development of submarines, and the chance to have a carrier at sea with the Tirpitz or Bismark was gone.
Astonishingly still afloat in April, 1945 an attempt was made to spirit the hull away from the advancing Soviets but it fell into their hands and while there is speculation over its fate it was either sunk by mine damage or broken up. An interesting look at what it might have been!
