The Instanter coupling was a simple and ecconomical solution to the problem of slack, a feature needed to make a simple chain coupling work. The chain has to be long enough to reach the next coupling hook easily, which results in the side buffers not being in contact when the couplings are stretched out and a series of small collisions occuring every time the wagons come together. The screw shackle coupling, used on passenger trains, can be wound in and shortened to close this gap between buffers, however these couplings are considerably more expensive and time consuming to operate.

The Instanter coupling has a specially shaped link of a T form, with a short setting and a long setting. In the long position the total coupling length is similar to the 3-link coupling, however the short position reduces the effective length of the coupling, almost eliminating the gap between adjacent buffers. Best of all the coupling can quickly be changed from long to short with a shunting pole.

As more vacuum braked express goods trains were started in the 1930s the Instanter coupler quickly gained favour, being ideal for use with the vacuum braked wagons. Following nationalisation BR made widespread use of an updated design, with a stronger, heavier and flatter looking Instanter link. Many 4-wheeled wagons are still fitted with these couplings today.
