Since 2001 the Ducati Monster S4 has been one of the top unfaired motor cycles available. From the engine point of view, it is not just an offshoot of the successful Monster range, but a completely new project. On this naked bike with its attractive, very technically effective appearance, carbon fibre has been used to reduce the weight, including of the mudguards and the cog belt cover. This power bike is driven by a powerful 916 Desmoquattro engine, the 996, which is distinguished by its excellent high-revving capability, offering a noteworthy flexibility and performance that are unequalled in this range. The twin-cylinder engine delivers 101 bhp and accelerates the S4 from 0 to 100 kph in 3.1 and from 0 to 200 kph in 11.4 seconds. The top speed is stated to be about 240 kph. At the same time the machine has a good, safe Brembo braking system. A rigid chassis provides it with simple handling and the stability that guarantees excellent road-holding and, above all, outstanding cornering. However the decisive factor is a perfect design, characterized by its attractive styling, powerful engine, remarkable sound and expensive chassis. Ernesto Arnaes is the author of the bizarre colour design of the Honda RC 211V on which Valentino Rossi won the Valencia GP 2003, the last race of the World Motorcycle Championship. This livery, inspired by the 1960’s style is the fruit of the competition organised by Repsol in collaboration with the Spanish magazine “Motociclismo”. The winning design was chosen by a jury composed of Valentino Rossi in collaboration with other notable personalities of the motorcycle scene such as M. Doohan, C. Fiorani and C. Drudi. The motorcycle painted with this design should have made its public appearance only on Sunday, the day of the race, but Rossi wanted to mount the new fairing and test it himself on Saturday because making modifications to the motorcycle on the day of the race never brought him good luck. | |
